Acer tree help
#1 We have had an Acer tree for quite a number of years now. In our old house it done ok, but since moving to our new home in 2018 it’s barely had any leaves on it. We tried moving the pot to various locations around the garden, conscious of sheltering it from the wind and we tried a new, bigger pot with Acer specific soil/potting medium but nothing has worked for it.
I think I want to learn to play the piano…
#1 I’ve had a notion to try and learn to play the piano. I’ve read enough to know I should get one with weighted keys but I’m confused about other features I may or may not need, or even what makes are decent.

Is Dolby Atmos worth the cost and the effort.
potshot Prominent Member #1 After watching this video and seeing the promise of Dolby Atmos in the home is not being delivered. It made me think and change all my plans to spend my money on height or in ceiling speakers. I have dropped the Dolby Atmos and decided to go for a very good 7.2 system. It seems we have been sold a dream, and the Hollywood studio's are not keeping their side of the contract and providing everything Dolby Atmos should be.
Todays word is...
lynx Senior Moderator #1 Following from a comment left by @mooperman (Oceangate Titan Sub lost on trip to visit wreck of Titanic.), I thought lets have a word of the day, nothing ostentatious/ too pretentious, just words that we may not hear everyday. We can all load up a dictionary and pick out candidates, but thats not really what I'm getting at, simply words that we only may hear on occasion and may have dropped of folks radar.
Discussion of our review of Ripley (Netflix) TV Show
#1 Read the Ripley (Netflix) TV Show Review. Pushing past the initially jarring black and white stylisation, Ripley gradually evolves into a lavishly impressive Hitchcockian Hannibal retelling of The Talented Mr. Ripley, and a juicy leading role for Andrew Scott.
Dirac Live - Use NAD Microphone or UMIK-1?
I have a NAD T758 V3 which comes with an included measurement microphone. But I also have an UMIK-1 already. Dirac Live recommends using the microphone supplied with the device and connect it directly to the amplifier. But my impression is that the UMIK-1 is of higher quality than the one delivered by NAD. So will I get better results with using the UMIK-1 connected to my computer? Or will it be better to use the NAD microphone connected directly to the amplifier?

Question - Have LG starting shipping TVs without the plastic screen cover? EDIT: No, I'm just an idiot.
Fade In Prominent Member #1 Ordered a brand new 55" C3 direct from LG. It doesn't have the plastic cover that you peel off, just has a "peel off" sticker and the LG guarantee sticker both stuck directly onto the glass. So it's no surprise there's a ton of scratches all over the glass.... I assume this isn't normal or LG have starting shipping tvs this way?? Dedicated TV Room
#1 I'm in the early stages of planning, but basically we are moving from an open plan room into a dedicated, sealed TV room. As I try to decide how to go about preparing the room for 5.1.4, there are a few questions popping into my head, such as: One sub or two? Although it will probably be two... Bipole or monopole surrounds? Acoustic panels? I know nothing about them... The biggest question I have just now though is which room to move into as I have a choice of two.

Peacock will also be the streaming home for Ron Moore's Syfy take on Battlestar Galactica.

Bad ridge tile job?
tigermad Distinguished Member #1 The end ridge tile fell off my roof a month or so ago when we had bad storms. It was replaced by a roofer recommended by lots of people in my village. I wasn’t there when it was done but it doesn’t look a brilliant job to me to be honest. Surely it could have been made to look better than this? Or am I expecting too much? It’s my own fault for not looking and questioning it sooner I guess.

New NAD T799
#1 Came across this, looks like the successor to the T778 is in the works. Interesting to see when/if it comes to market whether it does in fact have four independent sub outs and Dirac ART. Lets hope the reliability and fan have changed on this model. Really enjoyed my brief spell with the 778 just a shame the fan ruined it so this might be a good option if they've improved.
gas meter can't be smart because too far away from electric meter
chenks Distinguished Member #1 anyone know if the suppliers have come up with a way to fit smart meters for those that have been told it's not possible to fit? my scenario is that we bought a ground floor flat that have (at the point we took they keys) a pre-pay electric meter (inside the property), and a pre-pay gas meter (outside at the rear). after much going back and forward we got Octopus (or bulb as it was at the time) to agree to replace both with smart credit meters.

Monitor Audio used Platinum 2G or new Gold 5G ?
Yoz Prominent Member #1 Hi I have been contemplating replacing my Radius 90 front's with either some 2nd hand Platinum 2nd Gen, or possibly some new gold 5th Gens, I'd then get a matching centre. My room is not huge at 5M x 4M, so would probably go for the 100 bookshelf speakers, but if some 200 floor stands were are the right price would contemplate those, the 300's would be a bit too big IMO.
Your favourite ever movie scenes?

Fight Club
#1 Just finished watch Fight Club on DVD. What do you guys/girls think of the film. Hello Tosh got a Toshiba #2 Top film in my opinion. And with a better twist than Sixth Sense. I saw that one coming a mile off. But not this. And remember... His name is Robert Poulson. #3 Best film I've seen since SE7EN, though LA Confidential came close. ------------------ My DVD's #4 Very clever film. About time I watch a decent film. Have to admit the sound effects made me jump. I had to low down the volume, many times.
Perlisten D215s vs Monolith 15V2 Comparison
#1 Preliminary feedback - I haven't applied EQ. Just level matched the subs and haven't moved them into the same positions. Level matched with an REW test tone to a reference sub level tone. Trading blows at present but I need to dial them in. The D215S I'm running at -11db on the master level to hit reference. The M15V2 is at 60% on the dial. They both sound excellent. The D215S seems to pressurise the room a bit more but M15V2 seems to be more more tactile.
What is your earliest memory of watching a film at the cinema?
cezarL Prominent Member #1 We went on a tangent about subs for foreign languages in the "What film are you watching tonight/watched last night???" thread which got me thinking... What is your earliest memory of watching a film at the cinema? For me... I must have been two, three at most.
What’s the most ridiculous TV show you have seen?
#1 Plot wise, what’s the most ridiculous show you have watched that made you roll your eyes? Currently mine is Hijack with Idris Elba and Ozark is another show that really made me wonder if the script writers thought the audience was stupid. What’s yours?

My guess is they are not going to be cheap though, but I might be tempted to save a bit for the entry D12 model.

Tidal vs Apple Music vs Amazon Music HD
#1 I’ve had Apple Music for a while and I’m happy with it, but curiosity got the better of me recently after upgrading my front speakers to Monitor Audio Gold 100’s and heard that Tidal streamed at higher bit rates and CD quality. So I’m streaming both via AirPlay from my iPhone to my airport express and I’m struggling to tell the difference between the two. AM is louder and I have to turn Tidal up to level match it, but quality wise there seems to be nothing in it?

Thoughts on changing floorstanders to bookshelf
#1 I have a pair of monitor audio silver 8 floorstanders and I’m tempted to upgrade to the gold range, the gold 100 bookshelf in particular. Would this be a mistake? I’m worried the soundstage won’t sound as big. I would be using a sub for music and movies though. The gold 200 floorstanders are a bit too pricey for me right now and I have a smaller living room than I did when I bought the silver 8’s. (approx. 14’ x 15’). Interested in others thoughts.
