Exploring use cases of machine learning in the geosciences
Photo by Trevor McKinnon on Unsplash Tableau dashboard to accompany the project Github repository The dataset I’ll be exploring is the Regional Geochemical Survey Dataset, which is a programthat has been conducted in British Columbia, Canada since 1976 to ‘aid exploration and development of mineral resources’ [1]. A geochemical dataset is a chemical dataset, such as chemistry of selected elements that is derived from geologic media like rock or sediment.
Cleaning text data with Python
What my datasets usually look like before I clean them. Photo by The Creative Exchange on Unsplash It’s the least glamorous, but arguably the most important part of the job — cleaning data. I had an important realization recently, that led me to publish this article: If cleaning data is most of the job, why is there such a paucity of Medium blog posts on the subject? Recently, for work, I found myself needing to clean a text dataset.
Creating an interactive map of wildfire data using Folium in Python
Introduction I’ve been very interested in wildfires recently, as 2020 was a record year for them here in Colorado. Loosely continuing on with the theme of my first article, I wanted to do a project on wildfires in the US.
Building a web scraper for geologic data using Selenium and Beautiful Soup in Python
How to iteratively search a website and extract data from it Photo by AltumCode on Unsplash For a work task, I recently found myself needing to determine how many geologic maps have been published in the state of Colorado, a task that brought me to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) publications warehouse [1]. The National Geologic Map Database (NGMDB)[2], an offshoot of the pubs warehouse, shows 4,855 published maps for the state of Colorado (Fig. 1).
An Introduction to Linear Regression for Data Science
GETTING STARTED An overview of one the most popular machine learning algorithms In the world of machine learning — where humans find creative ways for machines to find creative ways to solve problems — few algorithms are as popular as linear regression. Where linear regression fits in. Photo source. To put it simply, linear regression is to machine learning as Yoda is to Star Wars: it’s super old, it's easy to ignore, but it is very powerful.
Estimating future snowfall in Denver, Colorado using machine learning in Python
Hands-on Tutorials A simplified analysis of the potential effects of aridification and climate change in Denver Photo by Cassie Gallegos on Unsplash As a geoscientist, I’ve long been interested in the impact climate change will have on my life, and the life of my future children.
