Crises of Elite Competition in the East and West
Whatever one thinks of today’s culture wars, it is hard to deny that the various barbarians currently rattling the gates were, in some sense, created by the failure of the prior generation to live up to its promises. Old center-left bromides about growing the economy by endlessly expanding higher education now ring hollow. Retreads of the Reagan program today serve as a stale punchline rather than a serious attempt at politics.
“Order” Prevails in Berlin
After the results of the federal election were announced, the German Social Democrats’ candidate for chancellor appeared defiant. Under no circumstances would he lead his party into another “grand coalition” with the Christian Democrats. Big words for someone who had just earned his party the worst election result of the postwar era. The candidate was Martin Schulz, the year 2017, and his words were a legendary exercise in hollow grandstanding.

(This article originally appeared on Leila Mechoui’s substack. It has been edited and reproduced here with the author’s permission.) A few months ago, Canadian Conservative Party MP Arnold Viersen had to apologize after asking sex work proponent and New Democratic Party (NDP) MP Laurel Collins if she had ever considered sex work as a career path. Collins was visibly offended, and shouts of “shame on you” came from other House members.
The New Cultural Revolution
The protest movements that have upended American life following the death of George Floyd have stupefied both pundits and ordinary citizens. In some ways, what we are witnessing is unique. But it is useful to compare this civic upheaval to another one, the Chinese Cultural Revolution that began in 1966.
