Welby is gone-but trust in the Church is broken beyond repair
It is generally agreed that being the archbishop of Canterbury is an impossible job. In modern times, tenures can begin with modest support and even, occasionally, enthusiasm. It is also generally agreed that by the end of their occupancy of Lambeth Palace, the archbishop will have tried to satisfy everyone and ended up pleasing no one. Justin Welby’s time as archbishop is now over.

Democrats are surprised by joy
It is 70 years since CS Lewis, who wrote more than 30 books—fiction and nonfiction—published an autobiography of his early life. For one born at the end of the Victorian era and who passed away at the dawn of the swinging 60s, Surprised By Joy (1955) remains a remarkable text. Lewis was fascinated by joy and its profound power to transform individuals, communities, contexts and countries, inspiring hope and a sense of possibility.
The roots of Trump’s religion
It is feasible Trump will be back in the Oval Office in less than year. Yet when I mention to colleagues that I have been researching Trump’s religious faith, reactions vary from mild scoffing (“I thought he was his own religion?”) to bafflement and surprise. But Trump has a faith. Let us start with Trump’s inauguration. Not many people will have heard of Pastor Paula White, but she was one of the clergy nominated to pray for Trump at his inauguration in 2017.
Boris Johnson’s Fall
For many people, news that Boris Johnson is to stand down as an MP will prompt joy and celebration. The sight of him ducking and weaving in front of the parliamentary Privileges Committee was enough to make even his most seasoned fans squirm. Now he looks to have been chucked out of politics for good. His ignominious fate completes a perfect modern parable. Yet in many respects, what is playing out is highly reminiscent of another, much older story.
The coronation of Charles III-Subjects and objects
“If you’re explaining, you’re losing” is a political maxim popularised by Ronald Reagan. The adage has been attributed to political pundit George Will, and refers to how any politician who finds themselves explaining will often already be on the back foot, and will most likely be confusing and losing their audience. Like hundreds of millions of people watching the coronation, I found myself caught up in a complex web of sentiment. The music was beautiful, and in places was spine-tingling.
Why Charles’s coronation could be a spiritual flop
Millions of us will soon be watching a coronation ceremony that purports to be largely unchanged for 1,000 years. It will radiate spiritual splendour and, to most, will seem timeless in a world of ceaseless transition. In British coronations, the meanings are multiple. The sovereign will be presented to, and acclaimed by, the people—in a kind of nod to egalitarian society. He will swear an oath to uphold the law of the land. Yet coronations manifest more.

With the Church of England dying, how much longer can we justify having bishops in the House of Lords?

With the Church of England dying, how much longer can we justify having bishops in the House of Lords?
One has to start with the facts, and they are brutal. All Christian denominations in the northern hemisphere are continuing to experience numerical decline, according to best estimates. This now includes evangelicals and charismatics (whose numbers show distinct signs of falling into recession) and Pentecostals (stalling, though churches of the diaspora and global south continue to grow).

Martyn Percy: Why the Church's response to the George Bell inquiry is so shocking
'If one imagines for a moment that Bishop Bell were one's own father, the point is clearly made. If a system is not good enough for our own fathers, then it is not good enough for anyone.' (paragraph 46, p. 12, Bishop George Bell Independent Review). The long-awaited Independent Review of the Bishop George Bell Case, conducted by Lord Carlile of Berriew CBE, QC was published on December 15.
Can the Church of England still afford nuance or ambiguity? Some final thoughts on Sir Philip Mawer's Sheffield review
What exactly is the difference between nuance and ambiguity? To the vast majority of the population, it is not much. But closer inspection suggests some pronounced dissimilarity. Nuance is enunciating a subtle difference, or a fine distinction in expression, meaning, response and refinement. Indeed, the very word 'nuance' derives from the Latin word for 'cloud', carrying intonations of light, shade, subtle tone and mystery. Ambiguity, on the other hand, is about doubtfulness and uncertainty.
Consciences, Convictions and Consequences: A Brief Response to the Review of the Nomination to the See of Sheffield
Last week saw the publication of Sir Philip Mawer's long-awaited report, reviewing the nomination of the Bishop of Burnley to the See of Sheffield – and his subsequent withdrawal as the nominee. There are many things to commend in the report. It has taken soundings from most quarters of the Church of England. It has listened attentively to, and reflected back to the Church of England an episode that was deeply unhappy (with ongoing issues still to be addressed and resolved).
