The state child welfare system needs an overhaul, not more Band-Aids
THE DEPARTMENT OF CHILDREN AND FAMILIES is broken, and as public defenders faced with the deficiencies of this system every day, we hope Gov. Maura Healey will make it a priority to fix it. The cases of David Almond and Harmony Montgomery have shined a bright light on DCF, but thousands of other children are harmed by DCF's intervention every year, with little public scrutiny. Factoring in poverty, DCF removes children from their homes at one of the highest rates in the country.
Civics education is crucial to engaged citizenship
A FORMER PRESIDENT of the United States calls "for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution" less than two years after a mob attacked the US Capitol seeking to prevent the certification of an election and calling for the vice president to be hanged. Perhaps the best antidote for such abhorrent behavior is a citizenry conversant in civics and US history. Sadly, that is definitively not the case.
Somerset infighting resumes; cable factory may be threatened
The town of Somerset - and its largest landowner, Brayton Point LLC - are fighting again, potentially jeopardizing the construction of a factory making cable for the emerging offshore wind industry. The proposed factory, a tangible sign of offshore wind's potential, would be a dream come true for the town, the company, and the state, and a possible harbinger of good times to come in Somerset. But right now the proposed plant is a bargaining chip in a game of hardball.

Baker, Polito wade back into local politics
STATE HOUSE NEWS SERVICE A MONTH AFTER they left office, former Gov. Charlie Baker and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito are wading back into the political fray with endorsements of the Republican candidate running for mayor of Attleboro. Jay DiLisio has been serving as acting mayor of the Bristol County city since former mayor Paul Heroux, a Democrat, gave up the mayoralty last month to take over as the county sheriff.
Healey won't file legislation subjecting her office to records law
GOV. MAURA HEALEY said on Monday that she will not introduce legislation that would make her office subject to the Massachusetts Public Records Law. "I don't think I need to file legislation," Healey told Jim Braude, co-host of GBH's Boston Public Radio. "I think that I can just implement along the lines that I've articulated, you know. And that's what I'm going to do." Healey on Monday posted a new policy on the handling of public records on her office's website.
