Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

My first unpaid job outside of my college newspaper was as an intern with The Addison Independent in Vermont. Great place to intern.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes.

How is social media changing news?

Social media and the speed with which news is being reported makes accurate analysis and strong sourcing more important than ever.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

Something I wouldn't say on the record.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I prefer PR teams to not send cookie-cutter emails about "your publication" & actually use our name and read my pieces to know how we report.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I'm pretty old school. Lots of notebooks and pens and my trusty recorder.

Why did you become a journalist?

It's the perfect combination of psychology, research, writing and socializing.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I think I wrote one article for it, but I thought I was going to become a lawyer. I started reporting in earnest my first year of college.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Learn a language. Or two.

When's the best time to pitch you?

NOT right before or right after a show starts. Even if an idea sounds great, I need time to research & my editors need time to read my pitch.
