Big Environmental Projects Are a Missed Opportunity
I recently saw a social media post from a young women looking to rent a room for a few weeks in Wellfleet. She was employed by an engineering firm doing sewer work.
Don’t Let Eastham Turn Into a ‘Resort’ Town
“Who Should Shoulder the Tax Burden in a Resort Town?” was the title of a recent New York Times article featuring Tom McNamara, president of the Eastham Part-Time Resident Taxpayers Association (EPRTA). In it, he argues that the residential tax exemption (RTE), which shifts a modest portion of the property tax burden to part-time residents, is unfair. The RTE was adopted in Eastham last year for the first time. I can understand McNamara’s reaction to this change.
The power of volunteering
By Mary Nee Wednesday Apr 22, 2020 at 8:02 AM Apr 22, 2020 at 8:02 AM As I reflect on my nearly eight years as president of the Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL), I keep coming back to something that is vital for any nonprofit organization – the power of volunteering. This is usually one my favorite times of year, as normally ARL would be poised to celebrate National Volunteer Appreciation Week (April 19-25).
Spring cleaning health hazards for pets
By Mary Nee Wednesday Mar 18, 2020 at 6:20 PM Mar 18, 2020 at 6:20 PM We’ve finally turned the clock ahead, which means that the days are getting longer and spring is just around the corner. In the season of new beginnings, many of us take this opportunity to complete our annual deep cleaning ritual. This is the time of year we organize the garage, donate old clothing, and move furniture to get into all the nooks and crannies we tend to neglect.
Pets and chocolate a toxic combination
By Mary Nee Tuesday Feb 18, 2020 at 3:51 PM Feb 18, 2020 at 3:51 PM Take a stroll through any grocery or convenience store during the month of February, and you will see a common sight -- a barrage of heart-shaped chocolate. While these tasty treats are a great impulse buy for your Valentine’s Day sweetheart having chocolate in your home can be dangerous – even life-threatening – for our canine loved ones.
Coming in from the cold
By Mary Nee Friday Jan 17, 2020 at 3:01 AM You may have seen the story on the news recently about a cat named Schooner who was found frozen to a shipping container in Dedham, Massachusetts. It is likely his fur was wet given the extreme cold, when he made contact with the container, he stuck to it. Fortunately, Schooner was found in time and brought to the Animal Rescue League of Boston’s Dedham Animal Care and Adoption Center for treatment and rehabilitation.
Leaving your pet in good hands
By Mary Nee Friday Dec 20, 2019 at 3:01 AM It’s the most wonderful time of the year – and for many, one filled with travel to see family and friends, or escape from all of the holiday hustle and bustle. Whether your destination be snowy or sunny, you’ll inevitably be making other arrangements to keep your pets safely behind. No matter if it’s a neighbor, friend, or boarding facility, it’s up to you to make sure your pet has what they need while you’re away.
How to combat diabetes in your pet
By Mary Nee Friday Nov 15, 2019 at 3:01 AM November is National Pet Diabetes Month and I thought this was the perfect opportunity to address this disease that not only affects humans but also our pets. Over the past few years, as I have walked through the three Animal Care and Adoption centers of the Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL), I have noticed an uptick in the number of animals diagnosed with diabetes but I am inspired by the following wonderful story.
Adopt your pet from a reputable shelter
By Mary Nee Friday Oct 18, 2019 at 3:01 AM October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month – I know, another month to celebrate pets, but as president of the Animal Rescue League of Boston (which operates our shelter at 3981 Main St., Brewster), this particular month is close to my heart. At ARL, we unfortunately see many situations where pet owners decide to adopt from an ad in the newspaper or internet, or from an unscrupulous breeder.
No. 3 field hockey records ninth shutout of 2019
Oct 05, 2019 MANCHESTER, N.H. – The nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College field hockey team blanked its ninth consecutive opponent to start the season, logging a 4-0 victory over visiting American International College on Saturday. Box Score Saint Anselm, the third-ranked program in NCAA Division II according to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association, moves to 9-0 overall and to 7-0 against Northeast-10 Conference foes.
Seven tips to alleviate a pet's anxiety
By Mary Nee Friday Sep 20, 2019 at 3:01 AM It’s been a couple of weeks since the start of the new school year, which means kids and their parents are settling back into their regular routines. And while we humans are slowly adjusting to early morning alarm clocks and busy schedules, have you noticed that your pet may not be adjusting so well? If so, you’re not alone.
Planning for your pet's future
By Mary Nee Tuesday Aug 20, 2019 at 9:29 AM I was walking through our Boston Animal Care and Adoption Center the other day and came across Max, a vibrant and lively cockatoo who was surrendered by his ailing owner. Did I mention that the bird is 38-years-old? It got me thinking about how many things need to be considered before adopting an animal – especially an exotic bird like Max. At 38 years old, Max is in good health and has the potential to live another 30 to 40 years.
A Moment of Paws: Keep vaccines updated
By Mary Nee Friday Jul 19, 2019 at 3:01 AM A healthy diet, plenty of exercise, mental stimulation and love – these are the everyday ingredients for a happy and healthy pet. However, preventative care, particularly vaccinations, are a step that some overlook, but it cannot be overstated how important it is to keep an animal up-to-date on their vaccines. Just like vaccines for humans, they are preventative measures that help improve immunity to a specific disease.
A Moment of Paws: Too hot for Spot
By Mary Nee Friday Jun 21, 2019 at 3:01 AM What’s on your summer beach checklist? A cooler, sunscreen, beach chairs, umbrella, towels, and snacks first come to mind.
A Moment of Paws: Boarding basics
By Mary Nee Friday May 17, 2019 at 3:01 AM We’re constantly on the go – long work hours, travel for business or pleasure and we just aren’t home as much as we’d like to be. These and numerous other reasons have led to an increased need for pet owners to use boarding or training kennels and daycare facilities on a regular basis to keep our pets stimulated, socialized, and happy. But when you drop your pet off, do you know exactly what kind of environment they’ll be in?
Moment of Paws: The ugly side of pet ownership
By Mary Nee Friday Apr 19, 2019 at 3:01 AM For every one of its 120 years, the Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL) has been combating animal neglect, cruelty, and abuse. This coming week marks National Animal Cruelty/Human Violence Awareness Week, an important week on a number of fronts. Sadly, the unspeakable act of abuse unfortunately is nothing new, however awareness has increased and there are a number of services and programs available to help those trapped in an often helpless situation.
A Moment of PAWS: Fostering a rewarding challenge
By Mary Nee Friday Mar 15, 2019 at 3:01 AM For any animal shelter, a reliable, responsible and experienced foster care network is invaluable. While the majority of dogs and cats that come to the Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL) find new homes in just a matter of days, there are times when an animal needs time away from a shelter setting -- and that’s where foster parents come into play.
