Rents by Red (the city online)
I’ve been playing with Red Note and stumbled upon a map of Shenzhen that provides price per square meter by subway station. I’ve realized that (1) I live in the cheapest part of Futian and (2) it really is cheaper to live in parts of the city that have metro connections but no real social infrastructure. In turn, the uneven distribution of social infrastructure returns (also on Red) results in classification of beasts of burden (牛马) based on where one lives.
The Tenderness Cage: Caring For Elderly Parents When At A Pension Age
It’s a strange set of circumstances when elderly parents are cared for by their pension-age offspring … Here they come again, pouring back to the mothership – ie home – for a spring visit or a special birthday, with gifts, grandchildren, and goodwill! After a short time, you wave them off again as they return to Perth, Berlin or even the next county some 20 minutes away, these siblings you grew up with.
Reflections on the lesser child, the overlooked one
WE TEND to imagine neglected children as they’ve been depicted in literature or film. There’s the cheeky ‘Orphan Annie’ model that in popular entertainment, and a comical ‘Matilda’ quality which depicts a clever than average child struggling beneath the domination of grotesquely vile parents or teachers. We adore it when these figures are shown to be ridiculous out-of-date authoritarians who eventually get their just desserts as justice is done.

Mary O’Donnell - Lo spazio fra Louis e me
The Art Of Aging: Does Creativity Increase With Age?
The somewhat surprising benefits and freedoms that can come with being an older artist … In The Advantages of Being a Woman Artist (1988), US feminist art collective Guerrilla Girls famously satirised the benefits women enjoy in the art world when compared to their male contemporaries.

Vascular and Osteological Morphology of Expanded Digit Tips Suggests Specialization in the Wandering Salamander (Aneides vagrans)
1 Introduction Many taxa, including insects, arachnids, birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians, inhabit forest canopies around the world. Living in trees confers numerous advantages to arboreal animals, such as decreased competition for resources, increased foraging opportunities, and protection from ground-dwelling predators (Kays and Allison 2001).
a path out of shenzhen…
In 2023, we said, “Let’s see what happens after COVID.” By April 2024, we were asking, “Where are you headed?” Two decades ago, when I began my tenure in Shenzhen education (first at GOS and then CSIE), the flow of young, talented and relatively wealthy Shenzhen students to US schools was gaining momentum. At the time, we had a clear understanding of what we were doing–getting great kids into great schools with an eye to returning to Shenzhen. It’s true.
what’s on display and who can see it?
This past week, in addition to participating in large public culture events, I also had the opportunity to visit two privately organized cultural spaces. The first was a private collection of shoushan stone carvings (寿山石) and the second was a community museum. So some preliminary thoughts about what these spaces suggest about post COVID culture in Shenzhen.

O'Donnell: Joni Mitchell proves why we should look beyond stereotypes about aging
Whether or not we’re older adults, we all are being bombarded with a blunt political narrative about aging that is as wrong as it is dangerous. In essence, the message is that “old” equals “bad” and that if a person is going to be a leader, they had better do it while they are young. Headlines, campaign messages and political cartoons, often across party affiliations, draw upon ageist tropes, painting older people as inherently deficient.
bogang, shajing, bao’an, shenzhen
Shajing is a large subdistrict in northern Bao’an. Until the road system took shape and the second line ceased to operate as a strict boundary (both circa 2003-4), most locals went to Changping, a market town in southern Dongguan when they wanted to purchase or enjoy those things that were only available in a town. Historical Shajing comprises three main areas: the oyster settlements, Bogang, and Wanfeng.
It’s not fat-shaming to insist we address the ever-expanding problem of obesity
I recently watched the super-talented Lizzo heave her super-sized self around the stage at a rock concert. This exceptional woman is a role model for millions of girls. She receives deserved recognition for her brilliance as a musician. But is there not also a subliminal message that it’s perfectly OK to be this fat in body when in fact it’s not? In today’s world, to dare to discuss fatness in any way that involves actually using the word “fat” might cause offence, even where none is intended.

an urban village by any other name…
This week Kaiqin, Wu Dan and I have been in Xiamen for a Tiffany glass DIY workshop. The workshop was held in a gated housing estate near the tourist docks for going to Gulangyu. As we couldn’t afford to stay in nearby hotels, we found a small (40 sq meters including open area) b&b (民宿) in Shapowei (沙坡尾), which any quick google will tell you is unlike any other neighborhood in the city. It’s hip, it’s arty, and it lives like an urban village.

cosplay in the park. kind of.
One of those unsettling (and the word is deliberate) ironies of the occupation of (or perhaps an ongoing preoccupation with?) Xinjiang has been the Han appropriation of Uyghur music and dance in public spaces. In Lianhuashan Park behind the Citizen’s Center, for example, people often gather for ethnicized plaza dancing. Sometimes, Indian a la Bollywood and sometimes Central Asian a la Xinjiang.

handshake 302+friends
It’s the tenth anniversary of Handshake 302 and you’re invited to the party!!!! The first event is “Mahjong Parlor.” We have designed a deck of cards–a handheld exhibition. Each suit is a curated introduction to a Handshake project. Hearts are images from the village residency; clubs are from the Biennale; diamonds are from “Singleton Lunch” and; spades are from “Art Sprouts,” which we ran at the P+V gallery (Longheu Girls’ School) in Dalang.
good bye OCAT
By now you probably know that the Overseas Chinese Town Contemporary Art Terminal (OCAT) has closed, marking the end of an era and no doubt (in retrospect we will discover) the beginning of another. Those of us who were here when OCAT opened in 2005, remember it as contemporaneous with the first Shenzhen-Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of Architecture\Urbanism (UABB).

musing out loud about the past three years: wtf happened?
I’ve been talking with friends about what happened during zero Covid. Friends outside China say, “You have to let us know what really happened.” Friends inside China share personal stories and rumors. However, it seems pretty obvious that no one knows what happened. We know what we saw on our WeChat feeds. We know what family and friends have told us. We know what we saw and overheard while waiting in line for our daily test. But. That seems to be all we know.

hop to it! it’s the year of the rabbit
The year of the rabbit is upon us. It is also the 10th year that Handshake has been around; we’re still here, like the Whos of Whoville (Horton heard’m). At Handshake, we’re excited to start hosting events again and to use our work to explore what the past three years have meant to individuals, to groups and to the city more generally. Where are we, and how did we get here? May you and yours thrive this year, may y’all find joy in your endeavors, and companionship on your uniquely wonderful paths.

processing shajing oysters, the postcard edition
One of the purposes of this blog has been to document changes in Shenzhen’s cultural geography. A second purpose has been to observe changes in what is represented and how the representation aesthetic have also shifted. Sometimes it’s like we’re not seeing and talking about the same city. Postcards from a long-ago Shajing oyster culture museum give a sense of those discrepancies–what was thought valuable and who was able to transform cultural geography into what kind of story.

did a campaign start when we were online for our daily corona test?
Throughout 2022, as corona testing has become normalized (常态), testing status and QR codes have increasingly been used to prevent possible political “outbreaks.” The most recent case involved depositors who were unable to withdraw money from their banks in rural Henan. This case broke over a month ago. It concluded several weeks later, when depositors went to provincial capital, Zhengzhou in order to make official complaints.

Opinion: Title insurance is vital to protecting the American dream
As someone who spent a career in the title insurance industry – both as a builder of a title business and leader of the industry’s trade group, — I am proud of the role we play in helping to protect what most Americans consider the biggest purchase of their lives. Title insurance is imperative for lenders to ensure the borrower has ownership rights to a property, but it doesn’t just protect against problems affecting title.
where have all the young folks gone…
no time passing… The melody is Pete Seeger’s, but the context is Shenzhen. Last night I was talking with friends, older friends of many years who have lived in Shenzhen since the early 1990s.
chit chatting corruption in tangshan
If you’ve been following Chinese social media these past few days, you are well aware that in Tangshan nine men brutally beat four women, while bystanders watched. Chinese social media has questioned police response, the bystander mentality of Chinese public culture, and the lack of media reporting on the event. One of the more interesting responses to the event is a chat transcript from some anonymous and unidentified chat group currently circulating.
of guessing games and scapegoats
So what’s happening at the top? Inquiring minds want to know. First, I come across this image of the Hunan Health Commission Vice Director Huang Huiyong being convicted of accepting 24.87 million yuan in bribes and kickbacks in corona testing. And yes, I too am wondering about the optics of wearing a Big White suit to the sentencing when no one else is dressed up to conduct a building sweep or poke throats.
the people’s education textbook incident
So, on Friday, May 27, the People’s Education Edition of forth grade textbooks set the internet ablaze. Seriously, despite everything else that was going on in the country–bank failures and Covid-crazy, rumors of upper level infighting and a tanking economy–the entire country was united in outrage over textbook illustrations. And frankly, the disgust is understandable.
the animated pandemic: big whites on shenzhen social media
“Big Whites (大白)” are the omnipresent and seemingly omnipotent figures of China’s 2022 lockdown, so named for their white full-body hazmat suits. Big Whites have been the Chinese government’s social interface for managing the Omicron outbreak. Big White teams consist of medical workers, police officers, community office representatives, and volunteers who come (as the government repeatedly emphasizes) from all walks of life.
where’s the money?
On May 23, protests in rural Henan brought national attention to the fact that five rural banks in the province–禹州新民生村镇银行、上蔡惠民村镇银行、柘城黄淮村镇银行、开封新东方村镇银行、安徽固镇新淮河村镇银行–are no longer allowing clients to withdraw savings. Over 2,900 clients have tried to access over 1.2 billion yuan, and there are reports that this is just the tip of the iceberg because many people have bought financial products that are held by these banks. Estimates suggest that millions may have lost billions. So what’s happened?
where have all the big whites gone?
I’m not sure if Shenzhen has settled into its new normal, but it does seem that zero-Covid is trying to be low-key in a city where 72-hour negatives remain mandatory for public transportation and buildings? Advertisements for volunteers, for example, are bright pink and non-threatening. Join and help, they invite ordinary citizens to participate.
