Crossing Over: Harris + Kurrle Architekten Crafts a Hybrid Building in Cologne
Can new architecture help offset the dwindling participation in organized religion and foster spirituality in everyday life? While this question has occupied the Protestant Church in Germany for some time, the recently completed Erlöserkirche (Redeemer Church), in a working-class district in north-central Cologne, provides evidence that an innovative building can indeed effect such change. Quietly monumental, the mixed-use building still reads as a church. Photo © Roland Halbe, click to enlarge.
Multifamily Design Innovations: Innovative Structural Systems

Define innovative structural systems that can open up the floor plates of multifamily housing projects. Discuss design approaches for breaking down the mass and impact of large, horizontal housing projects.
Neue Nationalgalerie Refurbishment by David Chipperfield Architects Berlin
One of the most acclaimed buildings of the 20th century, Berlin’s Neue Nationalgalerie (NNG), completed in 1968 by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, reopened in late August after a six-year renovation by the British architect David Chipperfield. The black steel roof, glass hall, and granite base once again display their stark, unmitigated materiality, while the structure and mechanical systems have been substantially refurbished.
Main Station Stuttgart by Ingenhoven Architects
The vibrant city of Stuttgart has long been a strategic commercial hub, nestled in southwest Germany and home to companies such as Bosch, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche. Its rail infrastructure is vital to local and regional mobility, and a major upgrade has been planned since the early 1990s. Stuttgart21, as it is called, includes four new stations, 40 miles of tunnels, and 44 bridges at a cost of $9.75 billion.

Schinkelplatz and Humboldt Forum by Rafael Moneo and Franco Stella
In shaping a coherent urban center since the fall of the Wall in 1989, the city of Berlin has faced immense challenges: the lingering destruction from the Second World War and the brutal 30-year urban bifurcation, and then the integration of the sprawling federal bureaucracy, once the city became the capital again, of a reunited Germany.

Gloggnitz School Complex by Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes
To offset a declining population and reinvigorate its town center, Gloggnitz, a small city 40 miles south of Vienna in the foothills of the Alps, decided to invest in a new school complex. The facility would replace the aging primary, middle, and special-needs schools. Most importantly, it would be a welcoming venue for activities and instruction for adults and children after school hours, strengthening a sense of community.
Design Vanguard 2019: Pool Leber
Although Munich-based architects Isabella Leber and Martin Pool had collaborated on residential projects for seven years, it was only in 2011 that they decided to open an office together. The venture soon paid off, and in 2013 they won an open competition for a museum in the northern German city of Vreden.
David Chipperfield Architects Berlin Completes Second Phase of Neue Nationalgalerie Renovation
Last month, the Neue Nationalgalerie by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe marked two major milestones: the fiftieth anniversary of its inauguration on September 15, 1968, and the end of the second phase of an ongoing renovation by David Chipperfield Architects Berlin.
IGS Kalbach-Riedberg by NKBAK
When the city of Frankfurt needed a temporary facility for a newly established middle school, the IGS Kalbach-Riedberg, they turned to NKBAK architects. The local firm had completed another provisional facility in 2015 for the pre-K-through-first-grade European School Frankfurt or ESF using prefabricated wood modules to meet a tight planning and construction schedule.
Historical Museum by Lederer Ragnarsdóttir Oei
With rose-hued Neckertäler sandstone on the facade and gray slate tiles cladding the high-pitched roofs, the extension to the Historical Museum Frankfurt feels as if it has been around for decades, although it just opened in October.
Interiors: Corbusierhaus Duplex by Joerg Aldinger
In 2014, when a through-floor duplex on the 15th and 16th levels of the Corbusierhaus in Berlin was offered to Stuttgartbased architect Joerg Aldinger, a fan of Le Corbusier, he purchased the unit sight unseen. But, although the block stands in a leafy, low-rise neighborhood roughly eight miles from the city center, Aldinger’s first visit to his unit was a letdown.
Pierre Boulez Hall by Gehry Partners
Berlin is home to what is arguably the most influential concert hall of the 20th century, designed by Hans Scharoun for the city’s philharmonic orchestra and inaugurated in 1963. Smaller in scale than that 2,440-seat auditorium, Berlin’s newest music venue, Pierre Boulez Hall (a tribute to the late French composer and conductor) may be nearly as impressive in form and context.
Christus Church by ahrens & grabenhorst
You could say it was a match made in heaven. When the congregation of the aging Christus Church in Hannover, Germany joined forces with a local girls’ choir, a partnership was formed that enabled the restoration of the historic Lutheran house of worship while creating a striking new venue for musical training and performance.
Architectural Record
In 2011, two Swiss towns on the western shore of Lake Zurich, Rüschlikon and Kilchberg, decided to construct a shared public school for grades seven through nine. Rather than building separate facilities, they pooled their resources in hopes of increasing staff and creating a single building at an elevated level of design that would enhance the learning experience with flexible spaces.
St. Paulus Catholic Church
The remote, rural town of Frommern, in Germany’s Black Forest, is hardly the place one expects to encounter finely crafted works of architecture. Yet the recently completed St. Paulus Catholic Church there brings design excellence to this enclave while offering its congregation a retreat from the trials of everyday life.
