What happened to Katrina’s cementaries?
A category three hurricane landed in New Orleans, Louisiana, almost twenty years ago. Her name was Katrina, and on August 29, 2005, she hit the bustling city and breached the levees meant to withstand her 100-mile-per-hour storm-surge winds—and they shattered under her weight. After hours of grueling force, Katrina dissipated and left the city of New Orleans destroyed, flooded, and without power.
The Columbine effect
Do you know the name of the first student killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999? Without googling, do you know her name? Where she was? Do you know any names of those who passed away that day? Now, do you know the names of the gunmen who murdered them? Most of the time – yes – you will know. And for the sake of Rachel Scott, the girl who was shot first for making the mistake of simply eating lunch outside, and all of the rest, we will not name the shooters.
Waco and the media
Mt. Carmel was torched thirty years ago. Whoever the culprit was is anyone’s guess – and it’s the most famous conspiracy left in the ashes of that compound. Whether it was the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms or the religious group of the Davidians who set the building ablaze, it still finished off the 51-day stand-off that captivated the citizens of Waco, Texas, in early 1993.
My dad, Alan
Alan Christopher Prokosch was born on a cold winter day in Newburgh, NY on November 12, 1955. He was the fourth of Earl and Luella Prokosch’s budding family. With three older siblings and four more yet to come, he grew up with a variety of different influences. From his father came his love of horses, and perhaps from his sisters came a love of animals and compassion. The older brother certainly assisted in history and the military. His mother most definitely helped him gain a sense of humor.
The UWF student who went missing almost 45 years ago
Barbara Ann Bockwith was 20 years old when she vanished on her way to class on Dec. 5, 1979. It was her final exam of the semester – one that was open note – and she remembered that she left her textbook in her car as she entered Building 58. With a, “I’ll be right back!” Bockwith left the building ten minutes prior to the beginning of the exam. After the exam began, classmates started to wonder where Bockwith was.
Questions answered with the communication department’s death enthusiast, Dr. Kurt Wise
Keeping with the incoming holiday season, Voyager student Mary Prokosch entered into the belly of the beast, Dr. Wise’s colorfully decorated office, to ask the most important questions Dr. Wise has ever been asked in his entire teaching career. These questions are incredibly important, thought-provoking and hard-hitting. However, it’s important to understand who this mysterious man is before we delve any further.
