Microsoftchef hyllar svensk AI-strategi: ”Lagom”
Sändningstid: 23 feb. 2025, 08:00Uppdaterad: 23 feb.
Brad Smith and Mary Snapp
Knowing what you know now about the internet and how your venture turned out, what do you wish you had done differently from the beginning? We would have worked harder to adapt to new regulation, rather than resisting it. Today, governments at all levels expect more responsibility and accountability from technology companies than ever before. We’ve clearly entered an era of rapidly expanding global technology regulation—and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Microsoft’s update on efforts to preserve, protect local newsrooms
By Mary Snapp Vice President, Strategic Initiatives, Microsoft [This month] the Pulitzer Prizes recognized the 105th class of journalists winning awards for reporting on some of the most important issues of our time: the pandemic, racial inequity and the integrity of elections. Journalists were recognized from large and small newsrooms, from traditional and, for the first time, digital newsrooms.
An update on our effort to help preserve and protect journalism
Last week, the Pulitzer Prizes recognized the 105th class of journalists winning awards for reporting on some of the most important issues of our time: the pandemic, racial inequity and the integrity of elections. Journalists were recognized from large and small newsrooms, from traditional and, for the first time, digital newsrooms. I am reminded both of how journalism has evolved with technology yet has stayed true to reporting on critical issues for our country.
New steps to preserve and protect journalism and local newsrooms
Growing up in Newton, Kansas our local newspaper, The Kansan, was the lifeblood of our community. At 3:30 p.m. every afternoon it landed on porches and lawns across the town, and we saw our local culture reflected in its pages: updates about important local events, high school sports scores, who won the local debate competition, and the weather forecasts our farming community depended on for their livelihoods.

I bet you could guess each person’s story. Maybe there’s a recent college grad looking for their first job in a startup, or one about to interview for a job at a law firm.

Girls program together at a Boys & Girls Club in Menasha, Wisconsin. As the head of Microsoft Philanthropies and the first female attorney hired at Microsoft, I’ve experienced firsthand the amazing potential for change when girls and women are empowered to create and innovate. Take Aishwarya Manoharan, a student of computer science and informatics at the University of Washington.

At Microsoft we know that computer science is more than just “coding.” It is a way to think, and a tool for creation.
Ensuring more Americans can benefit from the digital economy
Mary Snapp speaks about the importance of building a skills-based economy at an event to launch Skillful Indiana with Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb (right) on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018. Advancements in technology like cloud computing and artificial intelligence are transforming our economy and reshaping the future of work as profoundly as the Industrial Revolution did a century ago.
Empowering a sustainable future
Last year, I had the opportunity to visit schools and youth community centers in refugee camps in Greece and Jordan. Here young people, who were forced to leave their homes and communities, were preparing for the next phase in their lives. They were attending school and learning, through nonprofit-run programs, technology and entrepreneurial skills. I was moved by their willingness to work hard under difficult circumstances, with smiles on their faces, and by their hopeful view of the future.
A new partnership to support computer science teachers
Today we are excited to announce a new partnership with the . Microsoft will provide $2 million, over three years, to help CSTA launch new chapters and strengthen existing ones. It will help them attract new members and partners to build a stronger community to serve computer science teachers. We’re thrilled that students of all ages are discovering the exciting – and critical – field of computer science.
New solutions to help nonprofits drive impact
Justin Spelhaug, General Manager, Microsoft Philanthropies, speaks at the inaugural Nonprofit CXO Summit in Bellevue, Washington. As a company at the forefront of digital transformation, Microsoft is committed to bringing the benefits of technology to all. When we step back and look at challenges facing nonprofits, they struggle with the lack of technical capacity, scarcity of resources, and lack of partners and few technology solutions customized for their environment.

Empowering every person to be future ready
Beattyville, a town of about 1,200 people in eastern Kentucky, is a good place to see what can happen when rapid change disrupts a community's economic and social foundations. The coal industry jobs that power this once-prosperous mining town have mostly disappeared. Now, half of Beattyville's residents live in poverty. A third of its high school students drop out before they graduate. And the opioid epidemic has taken its toll.

Being ‘future ready’ — computer science education as a launching pad to a promising future - Microsoft on the Issues
If you are a student today, you face a future workforce unlike that of any past generation. Learning a specific skill or trade or profession will simply not be enough in an economy where jobs will be redefined or replaced by technology at a fast pace. This could be a bit scary… unless you believe that tomorrow’s opportunities, though different, are tremendously exciting. In fact, they are without limit for those who are “future-ready.” What does it mean to be future-ready?
Resilience against all odds
I recently visited the Oinyfata refugee camp in Greece. While there I met a young woman, Aminah, who was clearly a natural leader. She was engaged in an animated conversation with a group of other young women when I arrived. Every person leaned in as she spoke, as she encouraged them to be brave and more independent in their difficult situation. Later, she was willing to share her own aspirations with me. She wants to become a pharmacist.

Sparking opportunity for all youth around the globe
Sometimes all it takes is a spark: that one class, that one teacher, that one project which makes a difference. It can change the lives of young students who may have had little opportunity to excel, or perhaps even to complete high school, to enable them to become successful engineers, entrepreneurs or computer scientists. This is the inspiration behind our global YouthSpark initiative.
