What was your first job as a journalist?

I started as part-time intern at my hometown newspaper, The Republic, in Columbus, Ind. after my freshman year of college.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

A what?

How is social media changing news?

Less time to think and write. Greater premium on breaking news and being witty and interacting with readers.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

There was a Big 12 TV show one when Texas launched the Longhorn Network...can't remember it now. Drat.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Word, iMovie, digital voice recorder, Canon video camera, Twitter, blogging software

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter for work, Facebook for friends

Why did you become a journalist?

I love writing. I love telling stories. I love sports. I love immersing myself in a topic for months. I love trying to answer big questions.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

The Tampa Bay Times' five-part Varsity Blues series. The issues we raised encouraged Jon Gruden to give thousands of dollars to HS football.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Read everything you possibly can. Work harder than anyone else. Keep your eyes and ears open.
