Cloudflare OS: an open platform for agents, apps, and work
Every organization has a mission, a reason for being. Organizations pass that mission — along with their terminology, procedures, systems, standards, and ways of working — to their people. People, in turn, take this context together with their own experience and work towards the mission. Work can take many forms, from code, to documents and slides, to relationships, to outcomes in the physical world. Some of these are straightforward: code either runs or it doesn’t.
Partnering to make full-stack fast: deploy PlanetScale databases directly from Workers
We’re not burying the lede on this one: you can now connect Cloudflare Workers to your PlanetScale databases directly and ship full-stack applications backed by Postgres or MySQL. We’ve teamed up with PlanetScale because we wanted to partner with a database provider that we could confidently recommend to our users: one that shares our obsession with performance, reliability and developer experience. These are all critical factors for any development team building a serious application.
R2 adds event notifications, support for migrations from Google Cloud Storage, and an infrequent access storage tier
We’re excited to announce three new features for Cloudflare R2, our zero egress fee object storage platform: : Automatically trigger Workers and take action when data in your R2 bucket changes. : Easily migrate data from Google Cloud Storage to Cloudflare R2. : Pay less to store data that isn’t frequently accessed. Now in private beta (sign up now).
Improving Cloudflare Workers and D1 developer experience with Prisma ORM
Working with databases can be difficult. Developers face increasing data complexity and needs beyond simple create, read, update, and delete (CRUD) operations. Unfortunately, these issues also compound on themselves: developers have a harder time iterating in an increasingly complex environment. Cloudflare Workers and D1 help by reducing time spent managing infrastructure and deploying applications, and Prisma provides a great experience for your team to work and interact with data.
D1: open beta is here
D1 is now in open beta, and the theme is “scale”: with higher per-database storage limits and the ability to create more databases, we’re unlocking the ability for developers to build production-scale applications on D1. Any developers with an existing paid Workers plan don’t need to lift a finger to benefit: we’ve retroactively applied this to all existing D1 databases.
D1: We turned it up to 11
We’re not going to bury the lede: we’re excited to launch a major update to our D1 database, with dramatic improvements to performance and scalability.
Announcing connect() - a new API for creating TCP sockets from Cloudflare Workers
Today, we are excited to announce a new API in Cloudflare Workers for creating outbound TCP sockets, making it possible to connect directly to any TCP-based service from Workers. Standard protocols including SSH, MQTT, SMTP, FTP, and IRC are all built on top of TCP. Most importantly, nearly all applications need to connect to databases, and most databases speak TCP.
The first Zero Trust SIM
The humble cell phone is now a critical tool in the modern workplace; even more so as the modern workplace has shifted out of the office. Given the billions of mobile devices on the planet — they now outnumber PCs by an order of magnitude — it should come as no surprise that they have become the threat vector of choice for those attempting to break through corporate defenses.

Securing the Internet of Things

Whereas computers were mostly fixed and often shared, smartphones meant that every individual on the planet became a permanent, mobile node on the Internet — with some 6.5B smartphones on the planet today.

Announcing Pub/Sub: Programmable MQTT-based Messaging
One of the underlying questions that drives Platform Week is “how do we enable developers to build full stack applications on Cloudflare?”. With Workers as a serverless environment for easily deploying distributed-by-default applications, KV and Durable Objects for caching and coordination, and R2 as our zero-egress cost object store, we’ve continued to discuss what else we need to build to help developers both build new apps and/or bring existing ones over to Cloudflare’s Developer Platform.
Internet traffic disruption caused by the Christmas Day bombing in Nashville
Loading... On December 25th, 2020, an apparent suicide bomb exploded in Nashville, TN. The explosion happened outside an AT&T network building on Second Avenue in Nashville at 1230 UTC. Damage to the AT&T building and its power supply and generators quickly caused an outage for telephone and Internet service for local people. These outages continued for two days.
Accidentally From macOS to Windows and WSL
••• It’s been ~5 months since I’ve used macOS proper, after 13+ years of personal use and a handful of work-use. This began when I started using my Windows “gaming” desktop & WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) for maintaining OSS projects & other dev-work—in-between dungeons or rounds of Overwatch—purely out of the convenience of being on the same machine.
Diving Into FiveThirtyEight's "Russian Troll Tweets" Dataset with BigQuery
FiveThityEight recently released a dataset of what is believed to be ~3 million tweets associated with “Russian trolls”. These tweets are designed to spread misinformation (let’s not mince words: lies), and ultimately influence voters. If you haven’t read the linked article, I highly suggest you do that before continuing on.
