Frustrating Frustration - Unfair/ Wrongful Dismissal - Canada
Does an unpredictable event that temporarily eliminates an employer's business amount to frustration of the employment contract? The British Columbia Court of Appeal's decision in Aldergrove Duty Free Shop Ltd. v. MacCallum, 2024 BCCA 28 says it does not. The employer, a small, family-owned business, operates a duty-free shop on the Canadian side of the border with the United States.

IBC 2015: Zacuto turn your Canon C300 mkII into an ENG camera
Are you frustrated with the ergonomics of your Canon C series camera? Ever wish it handled more like an ENG camera of yesteryear? Now Zacuto have the answer. At IBC they were showing a new Canon C300 mkII ENG rig that you will be able to buy directly from Canon. Apparently Canon received a lot of requests from customers who wanted to use the camera in conjunction with their CN7x17 cine servo zoom lens to shoot reality TV and news programming.
“Nostalgia” - a short film using a RED Epic Dragon monochrome and Freefly ALTA Drone
As the first shipments of the new Freefly ALTA are beginning to reach users, Brooklyn Aerials have created a short film that shows off the drone’s potential. The ALTA can carry cameras like the RED Epic or ARRI Alexa MINI mounted on the top side of the craft, instead of the usual underslung position. This allows for upwards looking shots at angles that were previously unattainable.
Arri Managing Director Franz Kraus talks about resolution, HDR and the Arri 65
The Alexa 65 is a pure motion picture camera. It is targeted at blockbuster movie production with a rental price to match. Even though I may never get to actually use this camera for a real production, it is interesting to look at this high end technology and where it might take us all in the future. 6K and super large sensors may be unaffordable for most right now – but in a few years, who knows? I recently had the chance to talk at length with Franz Kraus, Managing Director of ARRI.
Who says professionals don’t use auto focus? Japanese director Yosh Enatsu shoots with the Canon C300 mkII
Well known Japanese director Yosh Enatsu has released some new Canon C300 MkII footage. The footage was all shot in 4K 30p with Canon Log 2 by DP Toshikazu Kaneto. Yosh was also the director on the first ever Sony F55 shoot and always seems to get his hands on the newest cameras. What is of most interest to me is the behind the scenes video showing how the new dual pixel CMOS auto focus and manual focus assist modes were used on this shoot.
The Z Camera E1- The world’s smallest Micro Four Thirds interchangeable lens 4K camera
A previously unheard of company called Z Camera has unveiled the 4K-capable E1, which they claim is the world’s smallest Micro Four Thirds interchangeable lens 4K camera. Z Camera was only founded in 2013, and it is interesting to see a relatively small company go head to head with the likes of Panasonic, GoPro and Blackmagic Design. At first glance the camera seems to be a cross between the Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera and a GoPro.
Resolution crazy? First 4K commercial broadcast in Japan, NHK record the Yankees in 8K and Samsung to develop a 11K display
If you think 4K is a fad then think again, especially if you live in Asia. Today, NHK will use six cameras at Yankee Stadium to record the first-ever baseball game captured in staggering 8K resolution. The cameras being used will be the Ikegami SHK-810 8K. The SHK-810 is the world’s first hand-held 8K ultra HD camera system and employs a single 33 million-pixel Super 35 CMOS sensor.
The Hexo+ autonomous flying camera
The Hexo+ is yet another autonomous flying system that’s getting very close to being shipped: it’s scheduled to be available in September. The project started off as Kickstarter campaign and raised over $1.3m US, funded by more than 2,000 backers from across the world. It was so successful it’s ranked in the top 20 most successful Kickstarter campaigns. The Hexo+ received rave reviews at CES 2015, winning best Drone of CES by Videomaker and Best of CES by iPhoneLife and Showstopper.
Vimeo overhauls the mobile video editing platform Cameo
Vimeo has overhauled the mobile video editing app Cameo, and by overhauling, I mean they have stripped it back down to its basics. The original Cameo was a complicated swiss army knife of mobile video editing and social media integration that never quite seemed right. Vimeo has now removed most of the complication and focused on making it a real stand alone mobile video editing platform.
Zacuto Canon C100 mkII Helmet and new Gratical HD EVF firmware update
Zacuto have released a new set of rig parts that transform the Canon C100 mkII into a more practical shooting tool. The kit comprises a Canon C100 Mark II Helmet, 5” Z-rail with 15mm rod lock, and a double jawed Z-rail lock. The Helmet attaches to the top of the camera body via a screw on top and one on the side – replacing the film plane screw on the left side of the camera. The Helmet has many extra 1/4 20 mounting screw holes.
Sigma 24-35mm f/2 DG HSM Art full frame lens - A multi range prime lens disguised as a zoom
Sigma has unveiled the 24-35mm F2 DG HSM Art, the world’s first large-aperture full-frame wide-angle zoom lens offering F2 brightness throughout the zoom range. The new lens is the first of its kind and should be viewed more as a multi purpose prime lens than a zoom. The lens covers 24mm, 28mm and 35mm focal lengths and should excel on cameras like the Canon 5D mkIII or Sony a7S.
C-Box - A SSD based alternative to using CFast cards
CFast 2.0 is rapidly becoming the new media standard for today’s 4K cameras. Cameras that already use CFast include the Blackmagic URSA and Arri AMIRA, with the URSA Mini and Canon C300 Mark II joining soon. Not only is CFast very reliable and compact, but it can also sustain write speeds of around 450MB/s and data-transfer speeds of over 500MB/s. Like most new technology, the cost of CFast 2.0 cards is currently high compared to SD or CF cards.
More new drones continue to flood the market as more cities continue to ban them
The number of new drones coming on to the market continues to grow rapidly. At NAB this year we lost count of the new products we saw and it’s no wonder: by 2020 it’s estimated that the commercial drone market will be worth $1.27 billion US according to a report by marketsandmarkets.com. It seems everyone wants a slice of the pie, but as that pie gets divided up, the number of places where you can actually fly a drone is getting smaller and smaller.
Panasonic Lumix G7 bridging the gap between stills and video- 4K Internal shooting for less than $800 US
Panasonic has announced the Lumox G7, a highly capable mirrorless micro four thirds 4K camera that will retail for under $800 US with a 14-42mm lens. The G7 features a 16 MP Live MOS Micro Four Thirds sensor that can record 4K UHD video internally as well as offer you a wide range of still capture and burst shooting options. Panasonic are touting the G7 as a true hybrid 4K Video/4K Photo camera, that is designed to offer the same level of performance no matter what you are using it for.
RodeLink Digital Wireless System First impressions
The first product in the RodeLink digital wireless range – The Filmmaker Kit – has commenced shipping to RØDE dealers worldwide. I’ve had my hands on the system for the last few weeks and used it on a job for Japanese broadcaster NHK. For those who aren’t familiar with the RodeLink system, it is Rode Microphones first foray into digital wireless microphones.
Beastgrip Pro- A Camera Rig For Your Smartphone
The quality of the images obtainable from smart phones continues to get better and better every year. Here at Newsshooter we have featured quite a few articles from contributors who have used a smartphone to capture stories for broadcast. Phillip Bromwell has shot quite a few stories for the Irish national broadcaster RTE and many others are following in his footsteps. While smartphones can be used to capture stories they really do need some accessories to make them work.
“MY RØDE REEL” - The World’s largest short film competition
The Rode Reel international short film competition was a bit hit in 2014 and it is no wonder Rode have decided to do it all again in 2015. Last year there were more than a thousand entries from seventy six countries competing for a prize pool of more than $70,000. This year’s competition sees a massive increase in the prize pool to over $200,000.
Chinese Company Xiaomi releases a $64 GoPro competitor - The Yi Action camera
You have probably never heard of Xiaomi if you live outside China. In 2014 they were China’s leading smartphone manufacturer according to a report from IDC, selling more phones than Apple or Samsung. They have no decided to enter the action camera market and their new Yi Action Camera is available in China for 399 CNY or around $64 US.

DJI Inspire 1 - A professional drone operator’s perspective from Hexcam’s Elliott Corke
Last week I received one of the first DJI Inspire 1 quadcopters in the UK. Like any machine I had to put it through its paces properly before supplying it to any of our clients. I run HexCam, a Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) approved remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS) operator based in the UK. We have been operating for three years in different sectors but have now begun to develop a specialism in supplying equipment and training new pilots.
The Sony F55 Shooting at 360fps
A little known fact is the Sony F55 has been able to shoot 360fps in full HD for quite some time. Now before you get super excited and go looking for it in a hidden menu there is a catch. It is only currently possible using the F55 live system that consists of the CA-4000, BPU-4000 and the SZC-2001. Additionally for recording and playback you will need the PWS-4400 XAVC server. The F55 live system is designed primarily for outside broadcast applications.
Panasonic 4K Camcorders That Can Record Up To 240fps In 1080P For $899US
Panasonic launched 6 new camcorders at CES 2015. The two of most interest are the HC-VX870 and the HC-VX970 which both record 4K Ultra HD and up to 240fps in 1080p. Yes you read that right, 240fps in full 1080p for a camera that costs $899. There is a slight catch though. The cameras can record at up 120fps but they have to use frame interpolation to slow the video down further to emulate 240fps.
The philosophy of buying universal camera accessories
Gear wrap with Matthew Allard & my top picks for 2014 from Clinton Harn on Vimeo. I recently caught up with Newsshooter contributor Clinton Harn to discuss his philosophy on investing in equipment rather than cameras. Cameras have a limited shelf life but non camera specific accessories can last you a lifetime. By acquiring equipment that can be used on any shoot or any camera you can maximise your investment. Lights, audio, batteries, matte boxes are just a few of those items.
How to get the fastest primary grade in DaVinci Resolve
Getting that essential first pass of color balancing done quickly and cleanly is among the most important aspects of a successful colour grade. One of my favourite tools for doing this is the often overlooked, but incredibly powerful Printer Light Hotkeys function. The color grade of almost all of the classic films in cinema history was done only with Printer Lights.
The Hubsan X4 Pro Quadcopter- A DJI Competitor For Around $500
Shenzhen Hubsan Technology is probably not a name that most people are familiar with. Based in Dongguan China they have been making remote control helicopters, planes and quadcopters since 2010. Until now, most of their product releases have been aimed more at the hobbyist rather than the film maker. This has changed with the introduction of the Hubsan X4 Pro.
Blackmagic’s Pocket Cinema Camera reaches the final frontier - Keisuke Iwaya shoots amazing space footage
Fusen Ucyu – BMPCC GOES TO SPACE from Raitank on Vimeo. Japanese amateur astrophysicist, Keisuke Iwaya has sent various cameras up to space using meteorological balloons to capture images of earth. On 20th of July, 2014, he sent a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera up for the first time. The BMPCC was housed in a special casing slung below a weather balloon. The camera was set to record to an Atomos Ninja Star recorder equipped with a 128GB CFAST card.
Convergent Design Announces The 7Q+ external recorder with 4K over HDMI
Convergent Design has today announced their new flagship monitor/recorder – the Odyssey7Q+. The big change to the older 7Q is that the new model has the ability to accept 4K/UHD video via HDMI and record it in Apple ProRes 422 (HQ). This is what many owners of Sony’s a7S and Panasonic’s GH4 have been requesting. It will supercede the Odyssey7Q, which is no longer being manufactured, and retail for $2295US.
Sony say they will FS7 fix slow aperture response
Ever since the Sony FS7 started shipping a few weeks ago there have been many complaints from users that the aperture dial responds very slowly when used with Sony’s own native FE and E mount lenses, as well as Canon EF lenses with the newest Metabones Speedbooster Ultra and Smart adapter IV. We have detailed the issues extensively here. Sony this week stated on their user forum that they will be fixing the slow aperture response time with certain lenses on the FS7.
DJI Inspire 1 quadcopter release date pushed back - Updated
If you were hoping to have a nice new quadcopter for Christmas then you may be dissapointed. According to multiple sources DJI Inspire 1 4K quadcopter shipping date has been pushed back from the early December, as previously listed by several retailers. Apparently there are a few things that DJI still needs to sort out before the finished production version ships.
Panasonic Varicam 35 has a dual native ISO of 800 and 5000 - how do they do it?
The Varicam 35 has a unique feature that sets it apart from most cameras. The ability to have two native ISO settings. How can a camera have two base ISO ratings you ask? Basically there are two analog circuits right after each pixel before the gain amp, one each dedicated to 800 and 5000 ISO. This allows for two “native”, very clean settings. In one mode it has a native ISO of 800 and when you switch to another setting the camera clicks over to its other native ISO of 5000.
Inter BEE 2014: Cinemax spiral slider dolly with lift, swivel and forward and backwards motion
Japanese company Cinemax have shown what they are calling “The World’s first high performance dolly with lift, swivel and forward and backwards motion.” Designed to use a small footprint the Katana allows the operator to get crane shots as well as letting the camera either move forward or backwards creating a sense of depth. The Katana is an interesting concept and it would be interesting to see how it performs on location.
Inter BEE 2014: EneClean Shows A Silent, Eco Friendly Alternative To A Generator
While walking around the show floor at InterBee I stumbled across a great alternative to a traditional generator. The EneClean portable battery solution uses a large rechargable Lithium Ion phosphate battery inside a pelican case. Unlike a traditional generator it runs silent making it perfect for live location work or where controlling ambient noise levels is critical.
Inter BEE 2014: NHK SHOW WORLD’S FIRST 8K 3D FILM
While all the attention is currently focused on 4K, Japanese broadcaster NHK is continuing to push the boundaries of 8K. At InterBee in Tokyo they showed the World’s first 8K 3D film. The 4 minute 3D fantasy film “Wish” was captured with a twin-lens stereoscopic filming system using two Astrodesign 8K cameras. NHK were showing the film on a 200 inch 8K screen with 22.2 channel audio.
