Review: Pienaar & Son Tiny Batch Medium Char
South African whisky has come a long way in recent years, and Pienaar and Son’s Tiny Batch is one of the bottles that has helped put local whisky on the radar, particularly in the main market with fun gifting campaigns and great social media work. Medium Char is part of a two-part release (the other being Heavy Char) both single grain, single cask whiskies matured in virgin American oak and bottled at 43% abv.
Review: Edradour 2000 Vintage 18 Years Old Barolo Cask Finish
Edradour Distillery has never been afraid of doing things a little differently, and I’m always excited by an opportunity to try their bottlings. This 2000 vintage 18-year old Barolo Cask is a particularly interesting example: spending 12 years in ex-bourbon casks before a lengthy six years in Barolo casks. The result is a whisky where the wine influence is substantial without completely overwhelming the underlying distillery character. Bottled at a punchy 56.5% abv, just 578 bottles were produced.
Review: MacDonald’s Glencoe Blended Malt 8 Years Old
There’s something I really love about whiskies like this. MacDonald’s Glencoe Blended Malt 8 Years Old isn’t trying to be elegant or polished — it’s a big, sherried, cask-strength Highland blend with plenty of personality. At 58% abv, it’s definitely not messing around. Produced at Ben Nevis distillery and sold as a blended malt, Glencoe combines Ben Nevis with another undisclosed Highland malt. It carries an age statement of 8 years, but offers more muscle than many others in its age group.
Review: Dunville’s 1808 Blended Irish Whiskey
Named after the year the Dunvile’s story began, 1808 is an Irish whiskey blend combining malt, grain, and pot still whiskies. This particular expression was first released in 2021 when the distillery expanded its core range, and is bottled at 40% with no age statement. Dunville’s 1808 Blended Irish Whiskey Review The nose is soft and fairly straightforward. Vanilla, green apple, pear, and lemon peel are the main players, with some sweet maltiness sitting underneath, alongside a faint hint of smoke.
Review: The Octave North British 25 Years Old 1991
I have always maintained that well-aged single grain Scotch is an incredibly underrated category. Single malts tend to get all the attention when it comes to fancy age statements, while grain is usually working in the background, quietly providing the foundation to blends. Give a good grain new make a couple of decades in oak, and with the right cask/s, it can become something truly special.
Review: Boplaas 1880 Single Grain Whisky 6 Years Old Tawny Port Cask Finish
Based in the town of Calitzdorp in the Western Cape of South Africa, the Boplaas Family Vineyards is a sixth-generation estate with distilling history stretching as far back as 1880. They are best known for producing Port-style wines and award-winning pot still brandies, but have recently made waves in the South African whisky scene, and have collected a couple of international awards across their range.
