I PICKED A BAD TIME to learn how to shoot. At least, that's what I think as I pack my gear for a long-range shooting class in Grand Junction, Colorado. I've been shooting rifles since I was 13, but a lot has changed since then-mainly the long-range craze.
The Con Artist: Step Inside the Workshop of Decoy Carver J.P. Hand

J.P. HAND sits at his workbench placing a freshly painted rig of 10 brant decoys into a slot bag while we get ready to hunt in the morning. He constructed each brant from three pieces of Atlantic white cedar with the kind of tools most people have in their woodsheds-a hatchet, some knives, and a bit of sandpaper.

I’m too excited to sleep. I’ve spent most of the night packing, and now that that’s finished, I just lie in bed, awake, staring at the ceiling and running through the contents of every bag in my mind.
Did I pack the grouse loads or just pheasant ammo? Did I purchase the magazine plug for my 12-gauge for the duck hunt? Do I have the right Allen key to adjust my bow? Should I pack a .22 in case we go after squirrels? Have I pinned enough elk hunting spots?

To kick off the launch of our brand-new Classics Issue, all week long we'll be publishing stories about timeless adventures, iconic gear, and, of course, historic guns. We hope you enjoy. Stay classy, everyone. Until he carved his first decoys, Jerry Talton was, by his own description, a "wild-ass redneck surfer dude" from the North Carolina coast.

My First Gun: A Pair of Hand-Me-Downs from Grandpa

Over the course of his life, my grandpa gave me two rifles. One was the first gun I ever owned. The other is the only gun that really means something to me. The first rifle was a .30/06 Remington Model Four with a Leupold scope. Even though the gun was a hand-me-down, it looked brand-new.
