What was your first job as a journalist?
I covered Milam County Commissioners Court and high school football for a weekly newspaper, during an internship in college.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. As a kid on a visit to Mexico one of my cousins had one.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
I'm blanking. #covfefe was funny for a minute.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
email. so I can ignore said pitch.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter. Everything when I want it right now.
Why did you become a journalist?
It was the first thing in school I was ever genuinely interested in. Holding powerful people accountable, and all that.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
You have chosen a career that does not lend itself to hours on the clock and off the clock. Just always be on the clock.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
An emailed pitch with a local angle into a great story on the cannabis business.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
They're all bad.
