Local Pro Basketball Player Baines Visits Home
By Matthew Yoder What is a dream if it is just words, void of action? Too often dreams vanish when neglected. That is not the story of Charles Baines. The 26-year-old native of Makemie Park knew at an early age he wanted to play professional basketball. When he was 7, he attended a B.A. Walker basketball camp and the dream began. Baines had a road map. Ace Custis was an accomplished player to the south in Northampton County, just embarking on a successful college and professional career.
Virginia High School Sports Delayed Until End of 2020
By Matthew Yoder — For the first time in over 100 years, high school teams will not take to the gridiron this fall for football. For that matter, no sports will be played until the close of 2020, following the Virginia High School League’s decision made Monday. By a margin of 34-1, the committee, which is made up of school superintendents, principals, and athletic directors from across the commonwealth, voted to adopt the third of three potential models for the return of competitive sports.
Despite ‘Crazy’ Weather, Virginia Planting Going OK
For a time back in March, it seemed like summer for Virginia’s Eastern Shore was just around the corner, as temperatures facilitated optimism for planting. Aside from the burgeoning global uncertainty that soon would overtake, the ground seemed ready. The Hickmans of Dublin Farms, in Horntown, Virginia, have stood firm against every curve the weather has thrown. They have been farming fields of potatoes continuously since 1876. In addition, they plant corn and soybeans.

HURLOCK, Md. — Pop’s Old Place is a farm of great generational significance, bolstered by the refreshing quality of authenticity and a visibly ambitious attention to detail. Reverence for the past stems from the familial history of a farm dating back more than 100 years. Darlene Goehringer is the current steward of the property. Along with her husband, Goehringer tends to cattle, as well as pigs and sheep, selling the entirety of her cuts steps from where both she and the animals were raised.
COVID-19 Adds Further Challenges to H-2A Program
If you’ve been to a grocery store in the past month, it’s likely something on your list was missing on the shelves. In approach of the 2020 growing season, this could be a harbinger of things to come, as some states face a potential shortage of workers to pick crops. Challenges to the H-2A visa program, primarily by way of travel from foreign consulates, has complicated the process by which workers will enter the U.S. and disperse to farms.
Delmarva’s Poultry Industry Keeps Steady with Rising Demand

By Matthew Yoder Five years ago, the girls soccer team at Arcadia emerged out of necessity. For years the school fielded a coed unit, and playing time was hard to come by for girls. Chelsea Sharp remembers those years keenly. Her own playing days were cut short after middle school out of the belief that the cards were stacked against her.

By Matthew Yoder Involvement with soccer on the Shore has seen a steady progression. The Firebirds stepped into their swings with great enthusiasm at Monday’s practice. Photo by Matthew Yoder. By Matthew Yoder Youth is the word when it comes to the 2020 edition of Arcadia softball. For fourth-year coach Keith Justis, that inexperience can be looked at as a strength, particularly if the players he has to work with blend their talent with a willingness to learn.

Chincoteague’s Long Journey to Playoff Contest Ends With Loss
By Matthew Yoder Chincoteague met a familiar opponent in the first round of the basketball playoffs Monday night, and just as it was in volleyball season, Rappahannock cut the Ponies season short. The Raiders were a most inhospitable foe, soundly dispatching the Ponies 62-30. In November, during the volleyball playoffs it was Rappahannock making the long journey to the island, and Monday night Chincoteague travelled a great distance attempting to extend their season, but it was not to be.

By Matthew Yoder Northampton continued to run the table in league play with its 66-39 victory against Chincoteague Wednesday night. Against intense pressure, Delk still managed to score 8 in the first half.

Reflection of Shore-Native Major Morgan
Morgan runs a route. Submitted photo. By Matthew Yoder It wasn’t a football season most anticipated at Hampden Sydney College. Standout wide receiver and Shore native Major Morgan entered as a preseason All-American, and the thought was the Tigers would compete for a championship. Outside of Tiger nation, the anticipation was the same, and the preparation thus took shape.
Firebirds Flying High on the Road, Facing a Big Week
Basketball hoop outdoor with sky By Matthew Yoder By nature of the schedule, the road has been home to the Arcadia boys of late. The Firebirds have traveled great distances, securing victories against Salisbury Christian and Colonel Richardson, while running their win streak to a season-long seven games. A loss this past Monday across the bridge against Norfolk Christian stalled the streak, but has not put a damper on what has already been a successful campaign in 2019-20.
Trap Crops Help Deter Pests
What started as a chance encounter out of a fruit tree pruning seminar, developed into a perfect scenario of a common nagging dilemma meeting an ancient solution. Michael and Kelly Edwards, proprietors of Wood Duck Landing Farm in Princess Anne, Maryland, attended the seminar with the hope of finding answers as to what they should do with their farm. Simon Zebelo, professor of entomology at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, had direct answers to a specific problem.

By Matthew Yoder After an exhilarating week in which Arcadia separated itself from its rivals with intense wins in league play, this week promised to be much more settling with games on consecutive nights against Holly Grove and Chincoteague. Monday’s win at home against the Eagles proved to be just that, a 30-point drubbing largely played with the starters resting.
