Darvish, like Mussina before him, almost perfect

Darvish, like Mussina before him, almost perfect

web.yesnetwork.com — Yu Darvish was one out from pitching a perfect game against the Houston Astros on Tuesday. The Texas Rangers' ace was dominant, striking out 14 in 8 2/3 innings. But a solid Marwin Gonzalez single foiled Darvish's bid for history. The Rangers re-grouped after the deflating hit and closed out a 7-0 victory, their first of the young season. Darvish's performance was reminiscent of Mike Mussina's close-call with perfection on September 2, 2001. In his first season with the New York Yankees, Mussina was one strike from a perfect game against the Boston Red Sox.

web.yesnetwork.com — Hideki Matsui has received the People's Honor award in Japan. The award -- one of Japan's highest honors -- is given to Japanese citizens who have excelled professionally and are beloved by the public at large. Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe presented the award to Matsui at the Tokyo Dome on May 5 -- the date was chosen in honor of Matsui's longtime uniform number, 55. Matsui's manager with the Yomiuri Giants, Shigeo Nagashima, also received the award and was honored alongside his former player at the ceremony. Bloomberg Businessweek reported on the the awards .

Misdirection leading up to NFL draft

Misdirection leading up to NFL draft

www.yesnetwork.com — Discerning between the signals and noise leading up to the NFL Draft is high stakes for team executives. The Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly made their decision about the No. 1 overall pick but aren't sharing that privileged information with anyone, and are still considering potential trade scenarios. It's widely assumed that the Chiefs will take one of the top offensive tackles in the draft, either Eric Fisher out of Central Michigan or Luke Joeckel out of Texas A&M. But if the right trade presents itself the Chiefs could deal the No. 1 selection for a stockpile of later picks.

San Francisco, Houston will be host cities for Super Bowls L and LI

web.yesnetwork.com — The NFL announced the sites for Super Bowls L and LI on Tuesday. San Francisco was awarded the bid for Super Bowl L and Houston for Super Bowl LI. Team owners voted on the host cities during the league's Spring Meeting in Boston. To secure a bid, a city must receive a 75 percent super majority of the vote -- or 24 of 32 votes. Tuesday's votes marked the first time in ten years that owners chose a host city on the first ballot -- and it happened twice in a matter of minutes.

Intrigue surrounds top NFL draft prospects

Intrigue surrounds top NFL draft prospects

web.yesnetwork.com — The 2013 NFL draft is shaping up as one of the most unpredictable in league history. The talent pool is deep, but lacking in elite prospects at the very top, particularly at the quarterback position. Leading up to the 2012 draft it was a foregone conclusion that quarterbacks Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III were can't-miss talents and would be selected No. 1 and 2 respectively. Teams in need of a QB picking at the top of this year's draft will not have that luxury. Still, the intrigue of the NFL draft never disappoints.

Pro Cause is Signing Off

Pro Cause is Signing Off

procause.com — I am announcing that Pro Cause is signing off today. It's been a terrific one year run and it's not easy to let go, even as I write this. First, some Pro Cause highlights: Pro Cause went live on Aug 7, 2011 - the first post was a brief article about the Jorge Posada Foundation. Preparation for the site went into effect many months before launching. The design of the site was meticulous. I hired my friend Tiago Cabaço (a world-class designer of sublime digital awesomeness) to design the site. I get frequent compliments on the site's design.

Slugball | October 30, 2013

slugball.com — In the early 20th century, baseball players were second-class citizens. My wife tells the story about her grandfather who was recruited to play for the Chicago White Sox. He sent the news via telegram to his father, who replied "Join White Sox, change name." He would end up at the Michigan School of Mines, not Comiskey Park.
