What was your first job as a journalist?
I was hired at a station in Kodiak, Alaska just months before the Exxon Valdez oil spill.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, a long time ago.
How is social media changing news?
It's another news outlet as well as a way of sourcing stories.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Spider Jerusalem
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It's becoming the eyes and ears of the ordinary citizen, and documenting and telling the stories that need to be told.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
Funny news #hashtag? I haven't seen it yet.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
No preference.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Marantz field deck, iPhone and BlueFire, Fuji digital camera, Cool Edit, Open Office, MS Word, FileZilla, WordPress.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter. It's more useful as a complement to broadcast news gathering and dissemination.

Why did you become a journalist?
I loved working with audio and radio, and using it to tell a story.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Not in high school. Worked as editor, reporter, and artist (no photog) at Jr. High paper. Reporter/photog at college paper, later editor.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Mini-documentary about a shipwreck's impact on pre-statehood Alaska.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Develop skills required in all forms of media from writing to audio, video, web production, and social. The single media reporter is extinct.
