Sheehy shines against Michigan State after 'snake-bitten' start
Tyler Sheehy described himself as a little "snake bit" through the first part of the season. The second-year captain notched just three points in the first nine games of the season. "I think for me it was one of those things where [I was] maybe a little bit snake bit early on, and I hit a couple posts and put a couple off the goalie's neck," Sheehy said. But last weekend, Sheehy scored four goals — two in each game — to let the senior captain get back to his 'lead-by-example' ways.

Schierhorn, Robson split time in the crease for the Gophers
There is a goaltender battle in Stadium Village this year. Senior Eric Schierhorn and junior Mat Robson have almost evenly split games this year, as the net-minders keep consistent play while the defensive core struggles. "If there's been one consistent spot for us from the start of the year through all nine games, it's been our goaltending," head coach Bob Motzko said. "When I looked on paper, it looked like we had two good goalies.
Senior day on Saturday for group who've had ups and downs
This year's seniors — a group who has been through a lot of change in the past four to five years — will play in their last game at TCF Bank Stadium on Saturday. Emily Brown makes hockey and science work together
Defender Emily Brown may try to ignore it on the ice, but science has been a presence in her life for the past few years. During her senior year at Blaine High School, Brown took an engineering course. That was the event that pushed her to pursue mechanical engineering as her college major. "They have this pre-engineering program where you take a bunch of prep classes," Brown said. "That's what first inspired me because I didn't really know what engineering necessarily was before that.
McCutcheon inducted into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame
When you think of New Zealand sports, rugby or cricket may come to mind — but not volleyball. On Saturday, the International Volleyball Hall of Fame inducted Gophers volleyball head coach Hugh McCutcheon into the hall as the first Kiwi to have the honor. “It’s just so surreal and it’s such an incredible thing, and maybe one day I’ll be able to describe it for you,” McCutcheon said.
Rem Pitlick proving to be an offensive spark on special teams
It's an old cliché that when players become upperclassmen, something changes in the way they play, act or lead. For Rem Pitlick, who has led on the stat sheet the past two seasons with 68 total points in two seasons and seven games, he's just going to keep on doing what he's been doing. "I guess I don't know the word, but whatever comes with it, obviously like people say the younger guys are looking at you and stuff, I don't really think that changes much for me, personally.

FOOTBALL ISSUE - Gophers underdogs against rolling Boilermakers
Another veteran running back down for the season and a new defensive coordinator means more change for the Gophers. Former defensive coordinator Robb Smith was fired, replaced by former defensive line coach Joe Rossi. Running back Shannon Brooks, who played in his first game of the season against Indiana, is out for the season. The simple question after these developments is: How will the team respond against Purdue?
Hart surpasses 1,000 kills
When outside hitter Alexis Hart is not enjoying ribs and sausage from Big T’s Barbeque back home in Kansas City, Missouri, she is spending her time as a dominant hitter for the Gophers volleyball team. Last season as a sophomore, Hart was named an AVCA Third-Team All-American. One could assume she would set a personal goal to become an All-American for the second straight year, but for her this is just not the case.
Gophers gamble with penalties, lose to North Dakota in Vegas
The Gophers experienced their first loss of the season to North Dakota on Saturday. No. 17 ranked North Dakota beat No. 5 Minnesota 3-1 in Las Vegas for the United States Hockey Hall of Fame game in a penalty-ridden contest that ultimately buried the Gophers. “In game number three, we have to pull the pieces out. ... What can help us move forward?” head coach Bob Motzko told reporters. “Not beat each other up, but we have to pull out what we can pull out.” The Gophers struck first.

Young's players say he strives to create well-rounded individuals.

Gophers confident in Tanner Morgan if Annexstad is unable to play
There is plenty for Minnesota fans to worry about after last week's 53-28 loss against Nebraska: The defense gave up high-yardage plays, the running game never got in a rhythm and starting quarterback Zack Annexstad was injured. However, a bright spot emerged from the struggle in Tanner Morgan. Morgan took over at quarterback for the start of the second half after Annexstad injured his midsection in the final series of the first half.
Band marches into enemy territory for first road game performance in decades
On Saturday, the Gophers will take on Nebraska in a hostile Memorial Stadium looking for their fourth win of the season and their first in Big Ten play. The University of Minnesota Marching Band will travel to Lincoln to take part in gameday activities, including a performance of their new "Stranger Things" themed halftime show.
Anticipating and analytical: Maddie Castro hopes to cement legacy for Minnesota
In her freshman season, forward Maddie Castro didn't start in any matches. She didn't start her sophomore or junior seasons, either. Finally, on Aug. 17, in Minnesota's season opener against Utah, Castro started in her first career match. The next match on Aug. 19, Castro scored her second career goal and recorded an assist in the Gophers' 2-1 victory over Utah State. Head coach Stefanie Golan said Castro has learned how to play to her strengths.
"Mama-bear" mentality and adversity fuel middle blocker Taylor Morgan
After having her collegiate career marred by four knee surgeries since joining the Gophers volleyball team, redshirt junior Taylor Morgan is having a standout year. “I’m just so proud of her and so happy for her in the way the season's going,” said head coach Hugh McCutcheon. The middle blocker from Blaine, Minnesota joined the volleyball program in 2015 but was red-shirted due to an injury. Throughout 2016 and 2017 Morgan played in 35 sets while converting 49 kills and 29 blocks.

"First period I thought was intense, it went up and down," head coach Bob Motzko told Gophers' public relations.

Gophers to play defending champions to open season
It is a new era of men's hockey for the Gophers. The team now has one of the newest coaches in the athletics department, a situation it hasn't been in since before the new millennium. Head coach Bob Motzko said the first couple of weeks in practice were "quiet" as his coaching staff took the reins in Dinkytown. "We're behind a tad, but the biggest reason is the first two weeks it was two camps, and they were staring at us and we were staring at them," Motzko said.
Filling defensive gaps
The news of a season-ending injury, again for safety Antoine Winfield Jr. sent shockwaves throughout the Gophers team. One of the players that was most affected is the one who started alongside him: Jacob Huff. Huff, a senior, has started every game this season after working his way up the depth chart over the last three years with the Gophers. He now faces the challenge of being the No. 1 safety, with freshman Jordan Howden filling in for the injured Winfield.
Rashod Bateman poised to become another receiving threat
A season ago, the Gophers leading receiver was Tyler Johnson, who caught 35 passes for 677 yards and seven touchdowns. The next closest receiver, Philip Carter, had 11 catches all year. This season, head coach P.J. Fleck and the Gophers know if they want to improve on their 2-7 Big Ten record, they must find a No. 2 option opposite Tyler Johnson. The team believes it has found that player in true freshman Rashod Bateman. "We brought him here to play," Fleck said.

While senior defender Emily Peterson recovered from a torn ACL, freshman defender Delaney Stekr took her place as a left outside back. Head coach Stefanie Golan said she put Stekr in the starting lineup for multiple reasons. "She came in fit," Golan said.
Gophers split weekend matches
It had to end eventually for Minnesota goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen. After four consecutive shutouts, Nielsen allowed two goals as Minnesota (7-5-1, 3-2-1) lost to Rutgers (7-1-4, 3-0-2) 2-1 in double overtime on Sunday. Rutgers opened the scoring in the 13th minute when forward Amirah Ali beat Nielsen on a penalty kick. It was Ali's eighth goal of the season.

"A lot of good stuff tonight, I'm very happy with our performance," head coach Hugh McCutcheon said. Recently named AVCA Player of the Week, sophomore opposite hitter Stephanie Samedy along with junior Alexis Hart led the Gophers' with 14 kills in the teams third straight sweep.
International experience helps Gophers
From a distance, the No. 6 Minnesota volleyball team looks like every other team, but out of the 14 teams in the Big Ten, Minnesota is one of only five teams with an international student on their on rosters. The Gophers have two international players. One is sophomore outside hitter Alice Zeimann who came to the states from New Zealand, just as head coach Hugh McCutcheon had.
The Gophers welcome back Minnesota-native Seth Eliason
Seth Eliason had missed running with his high school teammates, Owen Hoeft and Hunter Staack. The Hopkins, Minnesota native spent a year in Washington, D.C. and competed for the Georgetown Hoyas before deciding to transfer home to the Gophers, reuniting with his old teammates in the process. As Eliason is a three-time Minnesota high school state champion, several of Eliason’s teammates on the Minnesota men’s cross country team were familiar competition.

Tyler Johnson and wide receiving crew look to carry early success into Big Ten Play
Junior Tyler Johnson will enter Minnesota's first Big Ten game this weekend leading the league with five touchdowns. Johnson, who was highly touted as a recruit from nearby Minneapolis North, is primed to be the go-to target for a young Minnesota team looking for a better Big Ten season than last year. “Not focused on last year at all,” Johnson said.
Headed into conference play, freshmen can change the Gophers' Big Ten fate
Going into Big Ten play this week against Maryland, the Terrapins will see a much different team march into their stadium than the one they saw at TCF Bank Stadium last year. Twenty-seven true or redshirt freshmen have played for Minnesota this year. Whether that be on special teams, in a limited role, or as someone as important as the starting quarterback, Minnesota has and will need to use inexperienced players to drive the season forward. "Do we have older guys?
Marisa Windingstad is a calming presence for Minnesota's defense
Before the start of each match, Minnesota players yell out two words: "Every moment." Defender Athena Kuehn said Marisa Windingstad is a player who's ready for those moments. "She's physical on the ball," Kuehn said. "She can run for miles. She's great on offense, so she's calm. It's nice to have her distributing balls." Three of Minnesota's four starting defenders from last season are not currently starters for the Gophers in 2018.
Gophers rout Miami for third consecutive win
No Rodney Smith, no problem for Minnesota as it rolled over Miami to round out the non-conference part of the team's schedule with record of 3-0. Junior wide receiver Tyler Johnson caught three touchdowns and true freshman Bryce Williams was able to carry the load for Minnesota.
Antoine Winfield Jr. is poised to be a star
When Antoine Winfield Jr. realized the running back was going to throw the ball in the back of the end zone, he caught up to the receiver and intercepted the ball while somehow keeping one foot on the ground, sealing the victory for the Gophers on Saturday night. "I just remember seeing the running back getting the ball and I saw his hands go up like he was going to throw it... I just put my head down and high-pointed the ball," Winfield Jr. said.
Peter Jones prepares for veteran role in upcoming season
The men's golf team has much cause for optimism this season; just ask Peter Jones. The senior has reason to believe his final go-around with Minnesota may just be the best yet. "We have a lot of good players coming in and it seems like it's going to be a pretty promising year," Jones said.
Questions from the other side: Miami of Ohio reporter Chris Vinel
The Minnesota Daily called up Chris Vinel, a staff writer in his second year covering Miami of Ohio football at the Miami Student, to preview the upcoming game Saturday against Miami at TCF Bank Stadium. What is the key for Miami this week to get its first win of the season? Miami's kind of been shooting themselves in the foot the first two weeks. I mean, they've stressed all preseason and all summer long about mental toughness and discipline, and so far they haven't really showed that.
Daily Breakdown: Gophers open up as two-touchdown favorites over Miami of Ohio

When the Gophers' (2-0) redshirt senior running back Rodney Smith left the field in the first quarter without putting any weight on his left leg, Minnesota was forced to find another replacement at the position. However, with the help of two players, the Gophers' running game would help Minnesota come back to secure the 21-14 victory over Fresno State (1-1).
Questions from the other side: Robert Kuwada
The Minnesota Daily sports staff chatted with Robert Kuwada, a sports reporter from The Fresno Bee, about the Gophers' upcoming Saturday game against the Fresno State Bulldogs. Q: What are some things Fresno State does well and what are some things they need to improve on? A: Well I think right now you would say, offensively, they need to get a bit tighter than they were on Saturday night. Even though they put up 79 points on the scoreboard, they had two kick returns and a defensive touchdown.
Quick Hitters: Minnesota dominated New Mexico State
After a slow start to their first home game of the season, the Gophers were able to put together a 28-point second quarter to pull away from the Aggies and secure the first victory of the season. Walk-on true freshman Zack Annexstad made the first start of his career; he was only the second FBS quarterback to ever start the opening game as a true freshman walk-on. He went 16-33 and threw for 220 yards and two touchdowns.
Maddie Nielsen fights her way to become Minnesota's starting goalkeeper
When sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen learned that she would be Minnesota's starter for the 2018 season, she said she was ready to take on the responsibility. Nielsen has just begun her first season starting in net for the Gophers as the team is six games into the season. "It was a transition that I was ready for," Nielsen said. "I was pushing hard to start last year, although I didn't. Those few games that I got in made me want to be a starter even more.
Daily Breakdown: Minnesota a slight favorite over underrated Fresno State
The Gophers come off of a promising home opener beating New Mexico State 48-10. The new starting quarterback Zack Annexstad proved to be capable at running the offense with 220 passing yards going 16-33 in completions with two touchdowns and no interceptions. This week, the Gophers may have more of a challenge as Fresno State scored the most points it has in a single game since 1991 when they beat Idaho 79-13.
Gophers dominate New Mexico State in season opener
It was a bit of a slow start for Minnesota (1-0), but with the help of a 28-point second quarter, the Gophers beat New Mexico State (0-2) 48-10 in the team's home opener. The first quarter ended in a 7-7 deadlock. However, the Gophers quickly opened up the game with a pair of goal line runs by redshirt sophomore Seth Green out of the wildcat formation. Sophomore Antoine Winfield Jr. took back a 75-yard punt return to the end zone.
Gophers to play Georgia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament
The Gophers will travel to Norman, Oklahoma to face the University of Georgia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, as announced on the NCAA selection show Tuesday. Whichever team wins will play the victor of No. 14 Oklahoma and Utah in the second round. Minnesota (15-8, 7-3) lost in the semifinals of the Big Ten Championships to No. 3 Ohio State last weekend.
