Abstract Non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) is the sole pathway for repairing double-strand breaks (DSBs) in Mycobacterium tuberculosis during dormancy, relying on mycobacterial Ku (mKu) and ligase D, with mKu as the rate-limiting factor. Despite its essential role, the lack of structural information on prokaryotic Ku has hindered understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying bacterial two-component NHEJ machinery.
Plasmodium falciparum formins are essential for invasion and sexual stage development - Communications Biology
Abstract The malaria parasite uses actin-based mechanisms throughout its lifecycle to control a range of biological processes including intracellular trafficking, gene regulation, parasite motility and invasion. In this work we assign functions to the Plasmodium falciparum formins 1 and 2 (FRM1 and FRM2) proteins in asexual and sexual blood stage development. We show that FRM1 is essential for merozoite invasion and FRM2 is required for efficient cell division.

Family background, early life and education Robin's paternal grandfather, Francis Clark, was chief engineer at Burroughs-Wellcome and Co. of Dartford, Kent. He married Jessie Hawes in 1900. In 1901 the couple moved to New Zealand, where Francis installed the first electrically driven freezing plant for the New Zealand Refrigeration Company in Timaru, about 100 miles south of Christchurch. They later moved to Christchurch to open an electrical shop in the city centre.

Essential role of Plasmodium perforin-like protein 4 in ookinete midgut passage
Pore forming proteins such as those belonging to the membrane attack/perforin (MACPF) family have important functions in many organisms. Of the five MACPF proteins found in Plasmodium parasites, three have functions in cell passage and one in host cell egress. Here we report an analysis of the perforin-like protein 4, PPLP4, in the rodent parasite Plasmodium berghei. We found that the protein is expressed only in the ookinete, the invasive stage of the parasite formed in the mosquito midgut.
