Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I summarized news headlines from around the world daily for employees at Apple

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yeah...

How is social media changing news?

Having an open back-channel for discussion democratizes the medium as it strains the battle for attention

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

An email with untracked links to profiles and sites. I rarely click if I see tracking codes. But I do read every pitch.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

That would be telling.

What's your favorite social network?

I'm surprised to find myself enjoying Snapchat more than I ever expected to. Ephemeral isn't a bad thing.

Who do you wish followed you?

Someone ready to have my work make a difference in their life.

Why did you become a journalist?

I couldn't resist.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Photographer

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

An editorial on the importance of sharing your work before you think it's ready.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Don't be ashamed to put your experimental work out there for people to tear apart. The hard part is getting anyone to notice.

When's the best time to pitch you?

It's not about my schedule. Pitch me when you have something that's truly worth sharing.

What's your favorite drink?

Hot buttered cocoa.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Out on a photo crawl in San Francisco, at an industry meet-up, puttering around in the kitchen, or grabbing tea or a meal with friends

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

Tech isn't dry or dull. It's full of real people who are passionate about their work and love to share their ideas and opinions.
