Now Shipping! The Mystery Issue of The Mockingbird
God is a light that shines in the dark. So have no fear. Someone is missing — where? Someone has committed a crime — who? The famed filmmaker David Lynch once described the allure of such setups: “A mystery is a HUGE THRILL. That there’s more going on than meets the eye is a thrilling thing.” In a 2005 book surveying his life’s work, Lynch explains, “A mystery is like a magnet. Whenever there is something that’s unknown, it has a pull to it.

The Glen Festival Pass
Sunday, July 25 at 7:30pm ET Late in his life, St. Anthony traveled deep into the Egyptian wilderness to what the Life of Anthony called “the inner mountain.” As the founder of Christian monasticism fell in love with this place, he became “one who was like Mount Zion, keeping his mind unshaken and unruffled.” How does place shape our inner life?

Untitled poem by Thomas J. O’Gorman
Face to face with our limits, Blinking before the frightful Stare of our frailty, Promise rises Like a posse of clever maids Who do not fear the dark Because their readiness Lights the search. Their oil Becomes the measure of their love, Their ability to wait— An indication of their Capacity to trust and take a chance. Without the caution or predictability Of knowing day or hour, They fall back on that only Of which they can be sure: Love precedes them, Before it No door will ever close.

I Love You, Tricia, but I’m Not a Believer
IN THE SUMMER before my father’s death, in one of those brief moments during cancer treatment when the miraculous triumphs of a body seem plausible—when even the son of a pragmatic former priest forgets that the grip of terminal illness is total—my father suggested he say mass (as Catholics put it) one last time.

Donate to Image | Art in a Time of Trial
Hello Image Readers, I am writing to invite you to support the vital role of the arts in this historic time. During this strange, unsettling season, I’ve been reflecting on how the arts have taught me to see. More than just another lens through which to look, they’ve been a prism, a means of seeing more deeply.

Summer Stage - Image Journal
The 2020 Image Summer Stage was dreamt up last April as a dependable opportunity to gather with others to engage art in the midst of a wild amount of uncertainty and isolation. Twice a week, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, we came together to listen to poetry and discuss photography and watch films and listen to live music and so much more. If you were able to join, thank you for being a part of the circle of consideration and care that art and artists can draw around us.
Epic Quiet Tragedy
This crisis has swept the streets clear of familiar sounds. I always assumed historic events would be loud, since their echoes reverberate through the decades. In my mind, calamities are always accompanied by overwhelming noise: people shouting, bombs exploding, boots marching in unison. But this tragedy, for people waiting things out at home, is a silent one. The lockdown feels like turning inward. And backward.

Rebooting Myself
Traditional Seder plate (Photo By Karl Gehring/The Denver Post via Getty Images) I’ve had a somewhat checkered past with technology, as if it were a gene that skipped a generation, since my father was able to build the first TV on the block from a pile of odds and ends, and my children can tell a byte from a bit.

Mentored by the Dead
I was scheduled to give the annual C.S. Lewis lecture at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, on March 19. The lecture title was “Mentored by the Dead: C.S. Lewis and Baptism of a Writer’s Imagination.” This is the introduction I drafted the day before I found out the lecture was cancelled. … Thank you to the University of Tennessee and the C.S. Lewis Annual Lecture Committee for the invitation to speak to you tonight. And thank you all for coming.
Home Alone Together
Quarantine is quickly redefining and reconfiguring how people experience home. In this unsettled moment, artists can help draw our experiences into focus. Every week for the next three months, twenty-five artists from around the world will contribute one photograph from a different part of their living spaces. Together, these photographs—whether taken in a kitchen, bedroom, or looking out a window—will articulate a new, collective picture of home in a time of pandemic.
"Bereite dich Zion" from the "Christmas Oratorio," by J.S. Bach
Nun wird mein liebster Bräutigam, Nun wird der Held aus Davids Stamm Zum Trost, zum Heil der Erden Einmal geboren werden. Nun wird der Stern aus Jakob scheinen, Sein Strahl bricht schon hervor.
Repetitions - Image Journal
The old ladiesare engraved. I’m only twenty-seven, so it’s easy to assume they’ve always been old, eternally taking the Eucharist, then haggling with the butcher. They have walnut faces, aquiline noses, and Q-tip heads veiled in the cool, musty Florentine basilica. Their knee-length skirts and open-toed heels hint that they haven’t surrendered all together.
Liz Vice's “Refugee King”
Lyrics: Away from the manger they ran for their lives The crying boy Jesus, a son they must hide A dream came to Joseph, they fled in the night And they ran and they ran and they ran Ooh No stars in the sky but the Spirit of God Led down into Egypt from Herod to hide No place for his parents no country or tribe And they ran and they ran and they ran Ooh Stay near me LORD Jesus when danger is nigh And keep us from Herods and all of their lies I love the LORD Jesus, the Refugee King And we sing...
“Advent begins in the dark."
from “Loving the Dreadful Day of Judgment” Alone, alone, about a dreadful wood Of conscious evil runs a lost mankind, Dreading to find its Father lest it find The Goodness it has dreaded is not good: Alone, alone about our dreadful wood… The Pilgrim Way has led to the Abyss. Was it to meet such grinning evidence We left our richly odored ignorance? Was the triumphant answer to be this? The Pilgrim Way has led to the Abyss. We who must die demand a miracle.

A Hint Towards Podcasts
An old boyfriend and I used to tease that people who listen to podcasts incessantly can’t bear to “be alone with their thoughts.” Obviously we were reluctant to fall into that category, but as freelancers we were earbudders. Hearing stories from another voice, even if tinged with unmistakable NPR idiosyncrasy, was a welcome afternoon respite, a dual sense of intimacy and escape once the heavy-lifting of the morning’s creative work was done.
Support Image - Image Journal
Since 1989, Image has championed the transformative role that art invigorated by faith can play in the lives of individuals and the culture at large. Thirty-two years in, we’re still convinced that the work being produced at the intersection of art and faith is essential—and worth celebrating.
