Review The new universe’s second cinematic outing follows one of the best DC comics without capturing why it resonated. Last week, I had the once–in–a–lifetime pleasure of attending the world premiere of Supergirl. After looking in the right places, asking the right people, and getting a healthy amount of luck on my side, I ended up in the same room as movie stars, CEOs, creators of all kinds whose work I love, and my plus–one, who couldn’t care less about superhero movies.

Ryan Beatty has made his long–awaited return to music with his new album, Sweet Fortune, released June 26, marking his first solo project since 2023’s Calico. In the three years between albums, Beatty accomplished plenty outside of his own discography: earning an Album of the Year Grammy for his work with Beyoncé on Cowboy Carter, in addition to working with Miley Cyrus and Jack Antonoff.

We opened last Thursday to a peaceful, quiet villa. Not a frown in sight. Couples galore, all madly in love with each other. Well, except for Sol and Caleb, who just poured their hearts out only for them to get stomped on and pity–coupled by Ariana. Other than that, though, everything seems to be going swimmingly.

Film & TV The Hollywood phenomenon returns to the big screen with a tentpole that leaves audiences divided. There’s a kind of magic to many Spielberg movies. The warm, mystical sound of an accompanying John Williams score certainly helps, sweeping the viewer into a sense of nostalgia for the time in our lives when we spent afternoons in the backyard, chasing adventure. Ultimately, Spielberg succeeds at making his movies feel comforting and otherworldly—something both familiar yet captivating.

This week of Love Island USA started out with some disappointing news. Unlike what we all were expecting, the reveal of the first vote of the season has been delayed until Friday’s episode. So instead, we begin the week by watching the drama unfold as the bombshells are bombshelling.

The Toy Story movies are the greatest films of all time. Perhaps not the “best.” Maybe not the most profound. But certainly the greatest. At their peak, Pixar makes films that overflow with humanity. The Toy Story series represents the studio at its absolute best. And yes, that sounds like a wildly biased opinion, but you’d be hard–pressed to find someone who has watched these movies and genuinely disliked or thought ill of them.

Film & TV The new ‘Masters of the Universe’ film wants to interrogate masculinity and acknowledge He–Man’s queer legacy, but it’s too afraid to commit to either. Congratulations Gen X–ers, there’s a film in theaters just for you. Masters of the Universe is back and on a bigger screen than ever before! I’m sorry, what’s that? You’ve never heard of it? It’s no surprise that Nicholas Galitzine’s newest film flopped at the box office.

Thinkpiece With Pride Month in full swing, brands’ approaches to themed collections are in flux. Just a few years ago, June 1 meant opening Instagram to an inundation of rainbow profile pictures and stories as companies switched to Pride month–themed marketing—a pattern that has fallen off in recent years. This Pride month, many retailers have scaled back Pride–related activities, marketing, and funding, primarily because of government scrutiny.

Television After a canceled Christmas special, a showrunner exit, and another looming hiatus, ‘Doctor Who’ has to face an uncomfortable truth—nostalgia can keep a franchise alive, but it can’t tell a story. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a Doctor Who fan—or a Whovian, as the real nerds say. The modern reiteration of the show came out the year I was born, and it’s been an unwavering presence in my life.
