The cause of a fire in downtown Owen Sound is under investigation. The fire happened this morning in a unit on the 900 block of 2nd Avenue East between 9th and 10 Streets. Fire Chief Phil Eagleson says that there was minimal damage, approximately around $10,000 worth, from the blaze. No injuries were reported, and residents of the surrounding units were able to return to their homes once the fire was out. Eagleson says that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Unresponsive Swimmer In Meaford Dies Despite Lifesaving Efforts
A 55-year-old Ottawa resident has died after Grey Bruce OPP received reports of an unresponsive swimmer on Wednesday. The incident happened at a waterfront property on Cedar Avenue in Meaford just before 1:30 that afternoon. Police were called to the scene along with Grey County Paramedic Services and Meaford Fire Department. Bystanders had recovered the person from the water and had initiated CPR until paramedics arrived. Despite their best efforts, the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Update: Cause Determined For Bear Tracks Inn Fire
Nobody was injured during a fire at the Bear Tracks Inn in Lion’s Head on Wednesday evening. That’s according to Northern Bruce Peninsula Fire Chief Jack Burt. The fire started after a bathroom exhaust fan failed and caught fire. The fire then spread through the attic space and into the attached residences.
2nd Ave East Closed in Downtown Owen Sound
2nd Avenue East is closed between 9th and 10th Streets East. Firefighters, police and ambulances are on scene. It could be closed for a couple of hours. There’s no further information from responders yet.
Bear Tracks Inn Fire Destroys Motel
Bear Tracks Inn and Restaurant in Ferndale says its motel has been destroyed by fire. They posted on social media saying they’re ‘heartbroken’ and add the restaurant won’t be open today while they try to process the loss. They’re thanking first responders and the community for its support. No word from emergency services yet on what caused the blaze.
SBGHC Enters Partnership To Offer Residency Training
The South Bruce Grey Health Centre (SBGHC) is entering into a new partnership to offer residency training. The partnership with the Kincardine Family Health Organization (FHO) will support Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry students starting July, 2026. SBGHC President and CEO Nancy Shaw says Kincardine will host the residency program where the two resident physicians will complete two full years of medical training under the instruction of local doctors.
Roll-Up Gas Fundraiser For Saugeen First Nation Amphitheatre Restoration
Saugeen First Nation is doing a gas fundraiser for its amphitheatre restoration project. It’s a “Roll-Up Program,” at Saugeen Gas Bar (43 Cameron Drive) where individuals can round up their purchases to the nearest $1, $3 or $5, with the difference going directly toward the restoration efforts. “It’s a simple, effective way to support a meaningful community initiative,” says Brittany Roote, Saugeen First Nation Independent Business Association Coordinator.
Billy Bishop Museum Marks 25 Years Honouring Local Veterans
The Billy Bishop Museum in Owen Sound is marking 25 years of honouring local veterans. The Honouring Our Local Veterans (HOLV) event is an annual ceremony held by the museum in October recognizing veterans in Grey Bruce. Museum Curator Morgan Woodhouse says it honours veterans who served in the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, Peacekeeping, Missions, Afghanistan, and Canadians who served in the American Forces during the Vietnam and Gulf Wars.
