Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is characterized by impaired inhibitory control, which plays a role in the continued consumption of alcohol and relapse despite harmful consequences. External environmental cues, such as alcohol-related advertisements, can aggravate cravings and influence drinking behavior; however, their impact on cognitive processes, including inhibitory control, remains unclear.
An exploratory pilot study to assess drinking at bars or events located within grocery stores
Grocery stores are creating opportunities, such as a separate bar area and including beer and wine tasting events, to create a unique experience that caters to particular groups of clientele to encourage drinking.
Identifying responders to gabapentin for the treatment of alcohol use disorder: an exploratory machine learning approach
Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant medication approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of partial epileptic seizures and for postherpetic neuralgia. Gabapentin’s mechanism of action is as a calcium channel–aminobutyric acid modulator and has been available as a generic medication since 2004. Unlike medications for alcohol use disorder (AUD) with anticraving properties, such as naltrexone (Hendershot et al. 2017) and topiramate (Guglielmo et al.
Unusual-site thrombosis in patients with hazardous alcohol use: a narrative review
Hazardous alcohol use poses an increasing public health issue worldwide and it manifests as excessive consumption (acute or chronic), which may lead to addiction. The risk of alcohol-related pathologies correlates with the patterns of intake and increases with the amount of alcohol consumed. While the effects of alcohol consumption on ischemic stroke and ischemic heart disease are well documented, the impact on venous thromboembolism is less clear.

Early detection of liver disease in patients with alcohol use disorder improves long-term abstinence
Excessive alcohol consumption contributes to over 3 million deaths worldwide and is associated with over 25% of cirrhosis deaths globally (Moon et al. 2020; Huang et al. 2023). Rates of alcohol consumption and alcohol use disorder (AUD), defined as a pattern of alcohol use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress, continue to rise globally (Manthey et al. 2019).
Prospective changes in drinking during the COVID-19 pandemic among adults with unhealthy alcohol use
This study examined differential changes in alcohol use during the COVID-19 pandemic among adults with unhealthy alcohol use. Among 62 924 adults identified with unhealthy alcohol use in primary care prepandemic (1 January 2019 to 29 February 2020), changes in alcohol use during the pandemic (1 March 2020 to 30 June 2022) were examined using electronic health record data from Kaiser Permanente Northern California.
Naltrexone augmented with prazosin for alcohol use disorder: results from a randomized controlled proof-of-concept trial
The modest efficacy of naltrexone and other Food & Drug Administration (FDA)-approved medications for alcohol use disorder (AUD) (McPheeters et al. 2023) and their disappointingly low utilization in clinical practice (Ehrie et al. 2020) argue for continued efforts to develop more effective pharmacotherapies for AUD (Litten et al. 2020).
