The state of Florida executed 74-year-old Dennis Sochor at 6:16 p.m. on Tuesday. Sochor, a former Army paratrooper, was convicted of the 1981 murder of Patricia Gifford in Broward County. Witnesses of the execution said Sochor spoke too quickly for his final statement to be fully transcribed. In his remarks, he apologized to the victim's family, thanked loved ones, made religious references and committed his spirit to Jesus.

Gainesville teen sets sights on U.S. Junior Chess Championships
Beginning Sunday and lasting until July 24, 10 junior chess players will face off in the U.S. Junior Chess Championship. This year, Gainesville’s got a stake in the competition. 18-year-old Bach Ngo, a recent graduate of The Frazer School, will face nine other junior competitors from throughout the country. The U.S. Junior Chess Championship is an invitation-only national tournament hosted by the Saint Louis Chess Club in partnership with the U.S. Chess Federation.
UF’s $443 million housing expansion to include new Disability Resource Center building
UF is moving forward with one of its largest residential construction projects in recent years: a new multi-phase student housing complex that would add approximately 2,200 beds to campus by 2029 and a new facility for the Disability Resource Center. In an email statement to The Alligator, UF’s spokesperson Cynthia Roldán said the DRC serves more than 8,000 students annually and has seen a 350% increase in registered students seeking services over the past decade.
Further Steps: The Youth Civic Liaison Program must go on
After my opinion column was published May 18, Gainesville Mayor Harvey Ward invited me to discuss the Youth Civic Liaison Program, a proposal aimed at increasing youth participation in local government. During our conversation, he said he supported the idea. The YCLP would use the city of Gainesville’s myGNV app as a civic engagement tool to encourage high school students to report key neighborhood issues like potholes, fallen trees and illegal dumping.
