I can’t believe my new book is out. It has been lovely seeing it in people’s hands, and hearing their kind words of feedback. Today I wanted to write about how trying so hard to be ‘nice, kind, giving, easy’, can actually pile on the pressure and find us more snappy, not less! For a long time, I thought being kind, giving and easy made me a good person. I wanted to be someone people turned to, who made their lives nicer and easier.

Somewhere between the school run, the to-do list, the stream of pinging notifications and the ever-increasing demands, a lot of us stop showing up for ourselves. It’s not necessarily dramatic, but happens gradually when everyone else’s needs fill any space first and yours get nudged into ‘later, tomorrow’, or ‘when things calm down’ (spoiler, they don’t really!) For me it started long before motherhood.

Okay, so if you are anything like me, the answer to the question ‘what do you do after you’ve snapped at someone you love?’ has, at various points in your life, been one of three things… Brush over it and hope everyone moves on. Over-apologise for so long that the other person ends up consoling you. Or apologise quickly, but then carry the guilt and shame of it into the next morning, the next week, or maybe the the next decade.
