Chief information officers, chief technology officers, chief information security officers, and senior IT leaders from across Maryland recently convened at the Maryland Higher Education IT Leadership Summit, an exclusive, invitation-only event. The University of Maryland Global Campus shared that IT leaders from various academic institutions throughout Maryland gathered to discuss key priorities in a rapidly evolving field.

In a special edition of Profile of an AI-Ready Graduate, the International Society for Transforming Education has identified six key human roles as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes widespread. The paper states that it is insufficient for students to simply be familiar with AI (such as AI literacy). They must learn how to use AI to enhance their capabilities.

Researchers have documented a gendered age gap within image databases used to train machine learning algorithms. The findings suggest that artificial intelligence-based tools used by employers to review resumes may advantage older men while disadvantaging older women and younger applicants.

Morgan State University announced recently that student-athlete Tyrah Weems was named a 2026 Astronaut Scholar by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. With this prestigious undergraduate STEM award, Tyrah will participate in a year-long development program, including mentorship from a NASA astronaut. She is Morgan’s fifth Astronaut Scholar since 2020, continuing the university’s tradition of national STEM excellence.

Harris Staley, a first-year aerospace engineering student at Tuskegee University and Presidential Scholar, looks forward to continuing his internship as the research phase begins this fall. He recently announced on social media that he completed the summer portion of the Quantum Technology Computational Material Design project, led by Dr. Alcántara Ortigoza and Dr. Stolbov.

In December 2025, Texas Tech University, in partnership with the Texas Department of Information Resources, launched the free online Cybersecurity Essentials for the Electrical Grid course. This course serves as an entry point for those interested in managing risk and securing infrastructure in the Texas power and energy sector.

In May 2026, Alabama A&M University announced it would become the first institution in the state to offer a Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence (AI). The 125-credit, four-year program will welcome its first cohort in Fall 2026, following approvals from the Alabama A&M Board of Trustees and the Alabama Commission of Higher Education. “We are responding to the changing demands of the market,” said Dr. ZT Deng, dean of the College of Engineering, Technology, and Physical Sciences.
