Tl;dr - An excellent book that brings together so many disparate concepts, cultural symptoms, and critiques over the years into a very comprehensive framework for understanding what has been happening the past 15 years. A must-read sociological analysis; fair, critical, and sorely needed. Should be required reading for all symbolic capitalists.

My rate of finishing books may still be lagging but my rate of adding books to my TBR wish list is certainly not slowing down. There’s just so much to catch up on; so much to read; never enough time! This month we have some big thoughts on the future of life and the influence of past life on earth; unfortunate cases of bad medical research; how women have contributed to history; the modern age of self-censorship; and why people like watching other people play video games.

I‚Äôm a big fan of hip-hop and rap ‚Äď it‚Äôs my most listened to genre of music. But admittedly, I‚Äôve only recently began learning about the history of hip-hop. When I started listening to hip-hop as a kid in the late 90s, the industry was already well established having gone mainstream the decade before. But the 90s still saw a fundamental change in how beats were made. And that change came from one man who changed the game forever: James Dewitt Yancey.

When you study evolution, you quickly realize that sex matters. It underpins our development, relationships, society, culture, and our sense of self. Despite the current culture wars on the topic and the determination of a vocal group to erase the reality of sex, mountains of scientific evidence confirm the reality of sex and its importance for our lives. It’s humans that make sex complicated, not biology.

Our earth has changed radically over its 4.5 billion year history; and life changed from tiny cells to an extraordinarily diverse world of life forms over the past 550 million years. Life – and its evolution – is what makes our planet so fascinating. But it’s difficult for us to really understand what life was like even a few thousand years ago let alone millions of years ago.
