Pete & Mila Molinari, Weds 23rd September Pete Molinari is a British singer-songwriter, poet, and recording artist with one of the most quietly decorated careers in contemporary folk and blues. Born in Chatham, Kent into a large Maltese, Egyptian, and Italian family, Pete cut his teeth playing the folk and blues clubs of New York’s East Village before returning home to record his debut album ‘Walking off the Map‘ with the legendary Billy Childish, released on Damaged Goods Records in 2006.

Ouse Valley Folk Festival, 28-29th August It’s all happening in Newhaven this Summer. Hot on the heels of last month’s Port Of Cool one-day festival, local promoter Melting Vinyl has announced a new two-day folk festival to kick off the August Bank Holiday weekend. This will also take place in The Sidings, which is located 200 meters from Newhaven Town railway station, with bus stops for the 12 and 12a buses from Brighton & Eastbourne.

NetPol ‘One Day in Brighton’ report launch, Friday 7 August Saturday 13 June is one more significant day the long history of Brighton protests. Far right demonstrators yet again descended on the city and were met with thousands of people everywhere they turned, all dancing, drumming, singing and chanting in opposition. Brighton showed it’s true, full spectrum colours and literally boogied them back out of town. In many ways, it was a day to celebrate everything there is to love about this city.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds Preston Park Review It seems inconceivable that Nick Cave has gone from the terrifying, confrontational loose cannon of The Birthday Party to become an arena-filling crooner and agony uncle to his worldwide fan base. His writing and stagecraft have elements of Lee Hazlewood, Jacques Brel and Scott Walker, but he remains his own man, an enigmatic fire-and-brimstone preacher cum earnest lounge singer, who commands and receives devotion from his audience.

Rachel Love, Exploding Flowers and Telecom, Friday 8th August. There’s a tasty triple bill of guitar bands coming up at The Prince Albert on Friday 7th August. Albert regular Rachel Love headlines and was last seen here in February with her new project Railcard and this time appears in her solo guise.

Head east along the Sussex coast and the industrial port of Newhaven is having something of a glow up right now. And nothing could cement the town’s new ‘hot spot’ status more than the first ever Port of Cool festival, held in the Sidings last Saturday. With Brighton’s Family Store in the driving seat, alongside Look Again Newhaven, hopes were high. Pulling together a one-day festival at short notice is no small feat, but the event was charismatic, quirky, and, well, really, really good.

The Maccabees On The Beach Review This year’s On The Beach festival closes tonight Sunday with a rare visit from Moby. Last night (Saturday) was the equally surprising and delightful return of Brighton favourites, the Maccabees. This year’s run of gigs on the beach has been very successful. Most the OTB events were completely sold out, and the organisation of the events was in our opinion superb.
