Search ArticlesMeditating my burnout away
As we near the end of the semester and the assignments and expectations begin to pile high, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and dehumanized. Whenever I attempt to do something to relax, such as seeing my friends or taking a walk in the warmer weather, I cannot seem to shake the guilt that accompanies unproductivity. My breaks have recently consisted of scrolling on social media or binging bite-sized laugh track sitcoms on HBO Max.
As observed by a recent Rochester immigrant: the 25th Amendment and the great MAGA abandonment
“A whole civilization will die tonight.” Donald Trump’s post to his social media platform Truth Social April 7 marks what some would say is a departure from sanity, prompting calls from either side of the aisle to invoke the 25 Amendment and impeach him. The post only adds fuel to the ongoing splintering that is dividing the MAGA movement. His engagement in a war with Iran will, in my opinion, cost him and his party political power in November and in 2028.
An inside look at the throwing circle
Though each of the 53 men on URochester’s track and field team has had standout moments during the indoor season, only one broke the school record twice and set a personal record five times during the season: junior Ethan Beer. Beer started his track and field career in his junior year of high school. “My friends were on the track and field team in high school and I thought I’d give it a shot because it seemed fun,” Beer said.
What is up with F1?
Though NASCAR was once the star of the car racing stage, in recent years it has dwindled into the shadows of the racing community, leaving Formula 1 (F1) to take center stage. With Apple TV taking over as the home of F1, races are easier to access than ever. Major celebrities have made appearances at several Grand Prix, such as Beyonce and Jay-Z, as well as influencers like Lexi Rivera and Madeleine White Fedyk.
‘Petals, Pours and Picasso’: A night of scavenging for flowers
I am always down for a scavenger hunt, and so when I heard the Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) was hosting an event called “Petals, Pours, and Picasso” where the main activity of the night was a scavenger hunt, I immediately signed up. I managed to convince my friend to come with me via subterfuge (sorry Aeryn), and so we boarded the 4 p.m. shuttle last Friday to head over.
Birder’s Log: Signs of spring for the bird world
After a long, cold, snowy Rochester winter, spring is slowly making its way back into the city. Days are getting longer, the temperature is warming up, and any snow announced in the forecast isn’t sticking to the ground. But, as per usual in Rochester, spring weather can be unpredictable. One day it’s warm and sunny, while other days can be overcast with short(ish) showers.
New URMC study discovers antioxidant supplements could increase your risk of cancer
New research conducted by URMC’s cancer researcher Dr. Isaac Harris, who oversees a lab that studies the role of antioxidants in cancer development, showed some of the drawbacks antioxidants can have for your health. They found that antioxidants, which are typically found naturally in fruits and vegetables, contain a common nutrient that was previously known to prevent cell damage. However, it has now been shown to increase one’s risk of developing cancer, especially when taken as a supplement.
“WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA” might be the best pop you hear this year
Slayyyter emerged in the late 2010s as part of the decade’s burgeoning hyperpop movement. Her self-titled mixtape, with both production and a vocal feature from scene veteran Ayesha Erotica, positioned her as the next in line to her throne — raunchy, auto-tune slathered pop with trashy but electrifying production.
Project Hail Mary review: “Grace Rocky save stars,” Lord Miller save movies
It is not easy to make a movie that feels grand, epic, and existential while still feeling equally intimate and human. “Project Hail Mary” achieved all of that with the hysterical and heartfelt direction of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and Ryan Gosling as the unbelievably compelling lead.
Birder’s Log: South Florida
It feels like it’s been winter forever in Rochester, so when we hit Spring Break I was more than ready to chase some warmer weather. There’s no denying that a great way to escape the cold of the North is to visit a nice, warm place down South, in this case South Florida.
