Environmental groups vow to fight rules The Trump administration continues to put its stamp on the Endangered Species Act, repealing two rules adopted by the Biden administration. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced July 17 it will rescind the “blanket rule,” which gave threatened species nearly the same level of protection as endangered species. The service also will revise the process for designating habitat critical for a species’ survival.

It sits on a nearly 200-acre site in Eltopia, Wash., about 31 miles north of the Tri-Cities. Getting USDA approval took a long time. “This was attempt number nine to get this kill floor; I really just failed my way into finally getting a kill floor for almost 10 years,” Cody Hoseth said.

Producers feared higher prices Bayer AG withdrew its petition to slap antidumping tariffs on Chinese glyphosate, receiving thanks from commodity groups for listening to their customers. Bayer notified the International Trade Commission July 17 that it was no longer seeking an investigation into whether China was dumping glyphosate products into the U.S. Farm groups roundly criticized the petition, saying antidumping duties would raise costs for growers who use the herbicide.

The Washington Department of Ecology fined three brothers $48,000 for allegedly allowing cattle to graze along a stream in Whitman County. Ecology issued the penalty to Doug, Greg and Dan Stout, claiming they repeatedly allowed cattle to damage riparian areas and pollute Steptoe Creek. The fine is the first issued to an Eastern Washington agricultural operation for polluted runoff since 2013, according to Ecology.
