McCarthy were engaged in the quarterback competition.

VERMILLION, S.D. — Fifteen practices into fall camp, the University of South Dakota football’s offense is beginning to take shape and find its identity. There are still plenty of questions to answer before the Coyotes open the season Aug. 29 against Central Connecticut State at the DakotaDome, but after more than two weeks of preseason practices, USD is starting to discover what its new-look offense can become.

The South Dakota Transportation Commission on Thursday approved a nearly $290 million bid — about $40 million above the state’s estimate — to replace the Platte-Winner Bridge. The vote means the state is moving forward with what Department of Transportation Secretary Joel Jundt called “the largest project that the DOT has ever led.” The commission accepted Ames Construction’s $289.99 million bid to replace the state Highway 44 bridge over the Missouri River in the southeast part of the state.

SNOHOMISH County, Wash. —- Two boys picking berries in the forest of Tulalip Reservation discovered the body of 15-year-old Katherine Sue Miller on June 4, 1973, one month after she responded to a help wanted ad in a Seattle newspaper. She had been brutally sexually assaulted, and killed by blunt force trauma to the back of the head. The autopsy determined the murder weapon was likely a hammer.

STURIGS, S.D. — Four people were hurt across three motorcycle crashes near the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally between Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Over the course of the 10-day Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the South Dakota Highway Patrol releases daily information on crashes and crime in and around the city of Sturgis.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — One of two defendants charged federally in connection to the death of a missing Sioux Falls girl has informed the court he will plead guilty. In a notice filed Monday, 38-year-old Jon Rogness, of Brookings, informed a judge that he will plead guilty to conspiracy to conceal objects and accessory after the fact.

RUTLAND, S.D. — The Oldham-Ramona-Rutland School District will face another test at a future election to decide whether the district dissolves. The ORR School Board acknowledged at a regular Aug. 12 meeting a petition to vote on a previous plan to dissolve a district. District voters will choose if they want to accept the same reorganization plan that was subject of a Dec. 16, 2025 election. That time, people voted 367-363 to keep the district as-is.
