Autumn is finally here, and that means it’s time for colorful leaves, cooler temperatures, cozy sweaters and the Fairfax Fall Festival. This year’s event, the 50th annual, is Saturday, Oct. 10, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., in downtown Fairfax City. The fun includes three stages of live entertainment. food, crafts, beer gardens, children’s rides and activities, fire-station fun, magic shows and even a Taylor Swift cover band. Admission is free, and the festival goes on, rain or shine.

The 27 th annual Labor Day Car Show in Fairfax City was a big success, raising more than $55,000 for the charities it supports. Put on jointly by the City of Fairfax and the Clifton Lions Club, it featured more than 425 vehicles and drew 12,600 attendees – the most ever for this show. The 27th annual Labor Day Car Show is slated for Monday, Sept. 7, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m., in downtown Fairfax City. A wide array of cars, trucks and motorcycles will be on display along University Drive between Sager and Armstrong Streets, and in the adjacent parking lots. It’s put on jointly by the City of Fairfax and the Clifton Lions Club, and it happens, rain or shine. The fun also includes food, live music and an awards ceremony, and all the proceeds go to charity.

There is something special about the first day of school. Whether it is a kindergartener walking into a classroom for the first time, or a teenager heading into another year of high school, thinking about college, a first job, or finally getting behind the wheel. This August, on the 106th anniversary of the official certification of women’s right to vote in the United States, we note that, in today’s world, women’s rights and words, still, are often questioned. Modern American women themselves often forget just how recently come-by are the rights that we consider basic. Such as the right to vote, to be protected from domestic violence, to hold a personal bank account, to receive credit without a husband’s permission, and to serve on a jury.

After a decade of ups and downs but never discouraged, a local filmmaker is screening “Prosperity Creek” at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema One Loudoun on Sept. 2 for the Film Club Screening Series. Much of the film was shot in Reston, and locals will recognize Lake Anne, the Dulles Toll Road, Baron Cameron Park and a green Reston sign reconfigured to say “Prosperity Creek.” Zach Walsh says he first got the idea for the film back in 2015 when he was watching the Rachel Maddow Show with his dad.

George Washington and George Mason were from Fairfax County; Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry were from Virginia. But there was another local founder who was forgotten to time. On Aug. 1, 1791, just 8 years after the American Revolution ended, Robert Carter III began emancipating over 500 enslaved people, because he believed the words “all people are created equal,” and acted on them. This story based in Fairfax County lay largely forgotten for over 200 years.

For six years, Rohan Kapil, a rising senior at Westfield High School in Chantilly, has dedicated his weekends to TOPSoccer, an adaptive soccer program managed by the Great Falls Reston Soccer Club. His support earned him a nomination for the 2025 "Buddy of the Year" award. TOPSoccer is a community-based program designed for athletes ages 6 to 18 with physical, developmental or intellectual disabilities, bringing the enjoyment of playing soccer to young athletes of all abilities.
