Mike’s Place has been a student hub for Carleton University’s graduate and undergraduate students since 1972. Now, its alumni are reflecting on its legacy, highlighting the “unifying effect” it has had on them. [Graphic by Alisha Velji/the Charlatan] It’s hidden in a quiet corner of Carleton University’s student epicenter, but Mike’s Place isn’t exactly the university’s best kept secret.

(Chart by Miriam Visser/the Charlatan) In less than three months, Carleton University’s graduating class of 2026 will walk across a stage pitched in the university’s Fieldhouse, shake hands with a faculty member and walk away with an undergraduate degree.

[Graphic by Sara Mizannojehdehi] A man died in hospital Sunday evening after going into cardiac arrest at the Carleton University swimming pool. Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson Marc-Antoine Deschamps said emergency crews were called around 8 p.m. after an adult male was found in cardiac arrest in the pool. Lifeguards pulled the man from the pool and immediately initiated CPR with assistance from special constables.

[Graphic by Sara Mizannojehdehi] You’ll still be able to secure a sweet treat from the Nicol Building Bridgehead, but it’ll look a little different behind the scenes. Carleton University is taking over the management of the second Bridgehead location on campus, it confirmed in a statement to the Charlatan. The café will transition under Carleton’s dining services’ management come May 31. The store had been operated by the coffee shop chain.

My first encounter with the area was, however, a dark and puzzling one. Eighteen-year-old me had just arrived in Canada and I was heading to a family friend’s home for a scheduled 14-day quarantine.

Across both semesters, students competed in seven sports: basketball, dodgeball, flag football, ice hockey, soccer, ultimate frisbee and volleyball.

Every newly-elected Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) councillor has crossed the floor to the University of Ottawa’s student union, giving Carleton’s rival a majority student government over the city.
