Today I am excited to announce a new chapter in our organizational future. When I decided to leave my first job in the International climate space to create Climate Tracker, I really wasn’t sure if it would work at all. I knew there was a problem I wanted to solve, and how I wanted to approach it. I knew that for too many young journalists around the world, there simply wasn’t the support, training and opportunities they needed to tell the world’s most important story.

In the heart of Lupane, Matabeleland North, western Zimbabwe, lives Nomater Dube, a small-scale farmer, who upon gazing at her barren fields, recalls the lush green paradise of maize plants it used to be in a typical planting season. But now, the reality in front of her is far from the thriving crops she used to know. With hopelessness in her voice, Dube shares how her maize crops – which should have been teeming with life at this time of the year – refuses to sprout due to relentless dry spells.

In a significant step towards addressing climate change and food security, Zimbabwe has joined over 130 countries in signing a declaration to accelerate action on transforming agriculture and food systems.

In two weeks, world leaders will convene in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, for the 28th session of the Conference of Parties, otherwise known as COP28. The annual event is a gathering of representatives from countries that have signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) treaty aimed at addressing global warming and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. COP28 is a platform to discuss and negotiate ways to address climate change.

It was a historic deal, the Paris Agreement. 📝 For the very first time, the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was able to bring all nations into a common cause to raise ambition to fight climate change and bolster adaptation to its effects, with proposed enhancements to support developing countries. On a chilly December day in 2015, the Paris Agreement was born. It represented a breakthrough in the climate policy world, setting long-term goals to guide all nations on the road to global greenhouse gas emission reductions, making national commitments, and providing financing to developing countries to mitigate climate change, strengthen resilience and enhance abilities to adapt to climate impacts.
