At the Iceland Teachers' Union (KI) we believe sustainable school improvement can only happen when teachers themselves are active leaders in professional learning and policy development. Our union is placing a stronger emphasis than ever before on professional development. The reason is clear: teachers are deeply concerned that the unchecked, chaotic rise of Artificial Intelligence in schools has overtaken essential public policy. Technology is moving faster than regulation.

Are you a teacher, education support personnel, academic or researcher who has developed, contributed to develop, or used Artificial Intelligence (AI) in ways that respond to real professional and learning needs in education? We are looking for educator-led examples from across Europe that show how AI can be shaped by teachers, students and education values — not by commercial interests alone.

Education trade union leaders from Europe and around the world gathered in Nuuk, Greenland, for the Solidarity and Education Summit, organised at the invitation of the Greenlandic teachers’ union, IMAK. Held under the banner “Nothing about us without us”, the summit brought together unions to exchange experiences, address challenges facing Greenland’s education system, and reaffirm a shared commitment: education policies must be shaped with teachers and communities, not imposed on them.

The 44th Congress of the Hungarian teachers’ trade union PSZ (Pedagógusok Szakszervezete) and its President Tamas Totyik welcomed that the newly appointed Minister of Education and Children’s Affairs, Judit Lannert, met with the teachers’ trade union among her first official actions. As part of the EU-funded project Balancing AI in EDU, ETUCE has published a new working paper exploring how education trade unions across Europe are engaging with artificial intelligence (AI) in education policy. Based on a survey of 236 union representatives from 40 countries, the paper provides a first overview of where unions stand when it comes to AI-related advocacy. It reveals that while many unions are aware of policy developments, only a smaller group is actively involved in shaping them.
