A newly released analysis from Excelencia in Education highlights that HSIs enroll two-thirds of all Latino undergraduates and nearly one-third of all college students in the United States.

Today, the California State University (CSU) system released its Economic Impact Report highlighting the significant role the CSU and Chico State play in driving regional economic vitality, strengthening California’s key industries, and preparing a skilled workforce essential to California’s economy. The report, Moving California Forward: The Economic Power of the CSU, highlights the lasting return on investment across the state.

When University Photographer Matt Bates (Journalism, ’03) snapped a series of photos during an Adventure Outings tree climbing trip to the Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks, he didn’t think much of it. “The program’s director, Nate [Farrington], was climbing a nearby tree to assess branches,” Bates said. “Someone yelled, ‘Hey Nate, wave!’ I turned and saw him framed in this perfect light bubble and everything lined up for half a second.” His instincts kicked in.

Success brings change, and both Chico State’s basketball programs are feeling it this fall. After back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, they return with new-look rosters—graduation reshaping the women’s team and the transfer portal pulling several standouts from the men’s side up to Division I.

A long-awaited vision for a new Human Identification Laboratory (HIL) at Chico State is becoming a reality, with a formal groundbreaking celebration at 11 a.m., Friday, November 14 at West Second and Cedar streets, on the west side of campus. The HIL is a unique and invaluable state resource. Its team of forensic anthropologists work to recover missing persons, analyze and identify their remains, present vital information to resolve criminal cases, and provide closure to families.

The ancient rumble of a South African savanna elephant echoes through the speaker of Professor Samuel Siewert’s computer. “Biologists usually study these sounds because they’re interested in how animals communicate and their social structure,” Siewert says. “For us, it’s a way to save them.” These elephants can weigh anywhere from 4,000 to 20,000 pounds; however, their rumble is a sound unfamiliar to most, a secret language that vibrates at the very edge of human hearing.
