By the late 1950s, England’s Hammer Films was a creative and commercial juggernaut and their newfound bread and butter was horror. The Curse of Frankenstein (‘57) and Horror of Dracula (‘58) were huge hits, and Universal encouraged Hammer to rummage through their kitchen for more lucrative edibles. The Mummy (‘59) was the result–a colorful and creepy take on the mythos with the third terrific pairing of Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing.

Wrath of the Gods potentially sees the world of The Wicker Man come to a close, with the third film in the series being released some 53 years after The Wicker Man was unleashed on audiences. The Wicker Tree followed in 2011, and now we have Wrath of the Gods, which was inspired by a script left dormant for a number of years. The initial script was recovered from the abandoned archives of original The Wicker Man director Robin Hardy, which were found in the attic of the old family home.

With Onslaught, filmmaker Adam Windgard puts the monkey back in the box and reconnects with his gnarly genre roots. Mr. Kongzilla returns to his You’re Next and The Guest glory with what he calls a spiritual sequel: violent, conspiratorial, and indie-gritty. Onslaught is a throwback to John Carpenter, Universal Soldier, and blind rage slashers as a hybrid kill-em-all flick that unleashes the Wingardian horror fans revere.

With Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma in theaters, horror fans are starting to see what all of the early screening buzz has been about for Jane Schoenbrun's latest movie.
