After winning the popular vote in 2024, President Donald Trump will face a referendum in the upcoming midterm elections on his second term in office — a term marked by tariffs, high prices, aggressive foreign policy, mass deportations, and controversies over corruption at home. Democrats enter the election cycle in a stronger position than they were two years ago.

Americans are generally pessimistic about the state of their country. Previous Data for Progress polling has found that a majority of voters think life in the U.S. is getting worse, and that this low national mood stems from a variety of factors, including the cost of living, social division, authoritarianism, and wealth inequality.

Federal research grants are awarded on scientific merit: Panels of scientists and outside experts review proposals and recommend which research gets funded. In May 2026, the Trump administration moved to change that. The Office of Management and Budget proposed government-wide rules requiring that federally funded research "advance the President's policy priorities" and giving White House officials final approval over grants, with the power to overrule scientists' recommendations.

June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month, a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community’s history, culture, and contributions. And yet, President Donald Trump has not formally recognized the occasion as he did in his first term. In fact, several Republican-led states have designated June “Nuclear Family Month.” Public opinion has shifted right on LGBTQ+ issues over the last several years, largely concentrated among self-identified Republicans.

As Americans face rising utility bills and prices at the pump, energy is a central issue in many midterm election campaigns.

Consumer and economic sentiments have been on a steady downward spiral in the last several years, fueled by multiple consecutive periods of economic shock that have left voters little breathing room for meaningful financial recovery. Gallup recently reported a historic low in job market sentiments, with college-educated and young workers disproportionately pessimistic. Yet, the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs report continues to show low unemployment rates and decent job growth.
