EAGAN, Minnesota — Kyler Murray has officially won the quarterback competition and will move forward as the Vikings' starter. The next step in his development with the franchise is getting live reps with the starters. That will come when the Vikings travel to play the New York Giants on Saturday at MetLife Stadium in their exhibition opener. The expectation is that Murray will get at least a series before he passes the baton to J.J. McCarthy, Carson Wentz, and Max Brosmer.

MINNEAPOLIS — The date is finally set, and Kevin Garnett’s jersey will soon hang in the Target Center rafters. The official celebration is slated for Feb. 28, when Minnesota hosts Boston on national television. Boston is, of course, the team the Wolves dealt Garnett to in 2007. Garnett won his lone NBA title with the Celtics the following season. His No. 5 jersey has already been retired by Boston.

DYERSVILLE, Iowa — Suited in a full retro Boston Red Sox uniform, Roger Clemens walked towards his son, stopping just before he reached him. “Is this heaven?” the seven-time Cy Young Award winner asked, quoting a classic line from the 1989 film “Field of Dreams,” as he stood on the famous diamond used in the movie. “No, it’s Iowa,” Kody Clemens responded before reciting another famous line from the film, asking his father if he wanted to have a catch.

ROCHESTER — Pastor Rob Zahn, lead pastor of Zumbro Lutheran Church in Rochester, has written a provocative new book, “LSD to Galilee: Incarnation in Psychedelic Subculture,” that recalls the biblical phrase, “But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears to hear.” For if we had such spiritual perception, he argues, we would be less inclined to relegate the “sacred” and the “profane” into neat little boxes.

WORTHINGTON — Charlotte Heinz-Hoefert, a licensed professional clinical counselor for almost 13 years, opened her business Woven Counseling and Consultation Services, LLC, early in 2025 so that she could help people with immediate support and assistance. Part of her efforts involved bringing a Wind Phone to Worthington.

WINDOM — Despite both teams already advancing to the state tournament, the Fairmont Martins and Windom Pirates are still playing with plenty on the line. The Pirates are trying to win their second straight Region 10C championship, and they are off to a good start with a 7-5 victory in game one Wednesday night at Island Park. The Martins are trying to win the region title in their first season back in Class C after making the jump to Class B a year ago.

DULUTH — Duluth-based author Naomi Yaeger is traveling through southwest Minnesota with her book “Blooming Hollyhocks: Tales of Joy During Hard Times” that was published last fall, and will make a stop in Worthington from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Aug. 19, at the Nobles County Heritage Center, 225 Ninth St., Worthington. Yaeger’s book shares stories about her mother, Janette Minehart, growing up in Murray County during the Great Depression and World War II.

LUVERNE — The Jackson Bulls are one win away from their third state tournament appearance in four years with a big 5-3 road win in Luverne Wednesday. The Bulls overcame a 3-2 deficit at Redbird Field with three runs in the top of the eighth inning. With both teams falling in their Region 10C semifinal series, a win in this series will clinch the third and final Class C spot from the region, while the loser will see their season come to an end.
