The September 9th Nintendo Direct had a ton of off-the-wall announcements, as well as plenty of ports of beloved titles, new and old. XBOX is celebrating its 25th anniversary with collaborations and new hardware. An upcoming crossover with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is set to introduce a snazzy-looking weapon blueprint, especially for XBOX console players. XBOX acquired Activision Blizzard in October 2023. The deal went through almost two years of global investigations, including from the FTC in the United States and the CMA in the UK, before getting the go-ahead.

The Souls-like is a genre that has become one of the most popular ones in gaming. Year after year, we are flooded with games that have you running from bonfire to bonfire, just hoping you make it there before you lose all your precious currency. In spite of the major releases and announcements that have punctuated 2026 so far, the overall attitude in the gaming sector, business-wise, is a bit more mixed. Costs are rising on both the production and consumer ends of the equation, and as the gains from the COVID-era gaming booms slide back to pre-2020 levels, layoffs have been mounting at an alarming rate in studios and publishers both large and small.

Call my video game taste a jack of all trades because I'm out there beating up street thugs as an ex-Yakuza, taking Polaroid shots of my blue-haired ex, or just racing my pimped-out ricer in whatever arcade-racing game makes me reminisce about the PS2-era of racing games. But I don't think I've yet described my guilty-pleasure genre of cozy games, specifically the lite farming sim ones like Disney Dreamlight Valley or even Hello Kitty Island Adventure. Metroid Dread was a fantastic return to form for the Metroid series, a fast-paced, tense 2D adventure that focused on Samus's adaptability and rewarded quick thinking. Dread was a massive hit, and its success has finally led to a sequel. We won't have to wait long to get our hands on it, with the game releasing on January 28th, 2027.

Atlus has announced that Persona 6 is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on the same day that a ton of story spoilers for were accidentally revealed by Steam, overshadowing the reveal that more masked adventures will be happening on a portable system. The open-world genre has exploded in popularity over the past couple of decades, featuring diverse games like the smash-hit open-world RPG Skyrim and open-world driving games like Forza Horizon 5.
