Half Past First Cast
Blog,
Online/Digital
The idea for this website arose when we both realized that we were approaching our 50th birthdays. We’ve been fortunate to visit some incredible places, meet wonderful people and catch lots of exotic fish, but there’s still a lot more that we want to do and see.
The truth is that once you’ve made your first cast, you have a finite number of casts left in your life. The trick is to make the most of them. The one thing that makes us all equal is time – whether you’re a billionaire or a pauper, there are only 24 hours in your day.
While those people who are wealthy beyond belief or have unlimited free time may not have constraints on their ability to chase their fishing dreams, most of us do not have those luxuries. Our money is finite. We have jobs that don’t want to let us get away. We have families and other obligations. If you allow those factors to prevent you from living your dreams, though, you’re just making excuses.
Our goal in developing this website is to share some of our dreams, some of the experiences we’ve enjoyed, and some ways that you can live your best fishing life going forward. We’re planning to make the most of our remaining casts, and hope you’ll join us for the journey.

I had met the shop’s owner and founder Marc Higashi 19 years ago in Las Vegas at the one ICAST show I’ve attended. He was friendly with my fellow writer Terry Battisti, and somehow managed to get us rooms – I seem to recall that he built rods for one of the casino higher-ups. After the show I acquired some of his custom-built rods and one of them – a 7’4” cranking stick – is still consistently at the top of my rotation today.
Two Academy Fishing Sun Hoodies That Keep Earning a Spot in My Boat
Every time I climb aboard Captain Shane Jarvis's boat in Panama wearing my vintage camo Magellan Outdoors Men's Pro Jacob Wheeler Tech Hoodie, he asks the same question. "Are we going duck hunting today, Pete?" We travel to Panama to chase tuna, roosterfish and billfish, not waterfowl, so the camouflage always gets a laugh.
Crack Open a Crisp Streamside Beer With a Rainbow Trout Bottle Opener
When we return to Bear Trail Lodge in Bristol Bay, Alaska, later this year, we will catch silver salmon. We will catch grayling. We will catch Dolley Varden. I look forward to tussling with all of them, but the fish I look forward to the most is the rainbow trout. They grow huge up there and they’re gorgeous and they pull like a sonafabitch. And when I catch some, I will toast them with an Alaskan beer, possibly opened with a bottle opener fashioned in their image, to tie it all together.
Skyward Skin: A De Havilland Tattoo Survey
One of my favorite things about our trips to Alaska’s Bear Trail Lodge is the fact that you can hit new water every day and be assured that no one else will be there. Staying close on the Naknek is fun and it’s where we’ve caught our best salmon, but the flyouts are my jam. And of course flyouts require….flying. It’s a way of life for Alaskans, some of whom take planes to school, to basketball games and of course to fish every day. The iconic plane is the de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver.
WHAT ELSE did we catch in Panama in May?
Our primary goal of our May trip to Sport Fish Panama Island Lodge was to catch big yellowfin tuna and our group of 20 pretty much knocked that out of the park the first full day on the water. We had grown men asking the captains to find smaller fish because los gigantes had worn them out. Fortunately, even when the tuna are all XL, there are plenty of other species to catch there. We didn’t catch any marlin on this trip.
Mahi on the Menu: Using Mahi-Style Teasers to Tempt Billfish
Mahi mahi certainly don’t have much in the way of natural camouflage, which is probably what makes them an easy target for sportfish even bigger than they are. We haven’t yet witnessed a marlin cruising by with a mahi crosswise in its mouth like a dog with a bone — but it’s a sight we’ll keep chasing on our hosted fishing trips through Guatemala and Panama, two of the best blue-water fisheries in the world.
A San Diego Retreat – Recharge and Relax in the Center of it All
Whether you are planning a fishing trip, a family vacation, girls/boys trip, couples getaway or just exploring what Southern California has to offer, you should stay with host Lucinda, her place checked every box. This property seemed to be close to everything — Little Italy, the Gaslamp District, the Zoo, Balboa Park. It’s just a few minutes from the airport — more on that in the video.
The Goose is Loose
I’m not sure if it was intentional, but like us he gave his new best friend an avian name – Goose. We hope that the new family member gives him as much joy as we got from ours. We also hope that if Goose joins Paul in the boat he doesn’t hit all of the Power Pole buttons and trim switches as Rooster did, probably just to mess with us.
Twenty Pounds of Spotted Bass in an Atlanta-Area Traffic Jam
Lake Lanier is a summertime playground for the Atlanta area. While you may have the spotted bass fishing to yourself in the fall, winter and early spring, when it gets warm, you’re likely to be outnumbered by wake boats, pontoons and bikinis. That doesn’t mean you still can’t catch big spots there in the summer months. Here’s how Elite champion Paul Marks gets it done:
Skeet Stays Sane by Seeking the Salt
Bass Fishing Hall of Famer Skeet Reese has accolades a mile long, including a Bassmaster Classic win and an Angler of the Year title, but one of the keys to his success isn’t necessarily obvious: It’s his passion for saltwater fishing. During a recent trip to Sport Fish Panama Island Lodge I quizzed him on how this offshoot of his vocation helped him succeed when money was on the line and what his plans are for the future.
