Of course there are lots of trout-replicating swimbaits and other bass lures meant to imitate rainbows. After all, they’re the most common and most commonly stocked version here in the US. We’ve already found a few outliers, though, particularly Japanese species like Amago and Yamame. Even if you’ll never set foot in Japan, they might be a nice way to differentiate yourself on your home waters.

The 2005 Bassmaster Classic, held on the Three Rivers of Pittsburgh, was the third one that I attended and the second as a member of the media. Over two decades later, it remains one my fondest memories, a milestone Classic and an inflection point in my life. Even though Mike Iaconelli won a Classic title two years earlier, I suspected that the Pittsburgh event was also especially memorable for him, so I took an opportunity to pick h is brain about the particulars.

Sport Fish Panama Island Lodge owner Shane Jarvis generously donated a trip for two to the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame Auction last year, and he sweetened the deal by bringing 2009 Bassmaster Classic champion Skeet Reese and his wife Kim along. They’re experienced and fearless travelers, but I still wanted to get Kim’s unfiltered opinions about the fishing, safety and creature comforts.
