The Hernando Sun is a locally owned weekly newspaper. The founders of the newspaper are Rocco and Julie Maglio. They saw the need for a newspaper when the Hernando Today newspaper closed their doors in 2014.
Rocco is from Hernando, he went to school from Moton Elementary through Hernando High. Growing up in Hernando enhances his ability to provide background to ongoing issues.
The Hernando Sun prints
The Hernando Sun Printed their first issue in March 2015. They published monthly for a year before increasing to a weekly printing. The newspaper is delivered through the US mail, so it arrives with your mail. Source

With a decision looming from the Brooksville City Council over whether or not to terminate the city’s contract with the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, the sheriff himself took to social media to explain what that contract entails. In a video posted on various platforms on July 16, Sheriff Al Nienhuis said he sought to inform the public prior to the July 20 city council meeting when the topic of pulling out of the HCSO contract was on the agenda.
HCSO, HCFR team up to save baby ducks
The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office combined forces with Hernando County Fire Rescue on Saturday afternoon and the result was saving a group of baby ducks. Five ducklings were stuck in a storm drain near Oak Hill Hospital. HCSO deputies and first responders from HCFR Engine 12 came on the scene. All five baby ducks were safety removed from the drain and returned to their mother.
Suspect returns stolen SUV, then escapes on foot
Among the Sheriff’s Briefing Notes released by the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office on Friday was a bizarre car theft that was aborted as soon as it began. A homeowner was alerted that someone had started up his SUV and an unknown suspect was seen backing the SUV out of the driveway with the headlights turned off. But just as emergency communications was contacted, the suspect strangely drove back past the house and parked the SUV in the driveway, then fled on foot.
Argument leads to shooting death in Holiday
An argument between two adult men ended with one of them dead early Friday morning in Holiday. The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an incident in the area of Vision Avenue that occurred around 12:10 a.m. Two men who are known to each other got into an altercation that escalated into one of man shooting the other. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene while the suspect was arrested. According to the PSO, this was an isolated incident with no threat to the public.
