Thank you to Southlake Orthopaedics for sponsoring our coverage of Hoover football this season. The Alabama Sports Writers Association released its latest high school football poll Wednesday morning. Hoover dropped to No. 8 in Class 6A, down from No. 4 a week ago. The Bucs fell 40-24 to Hewitt-Trussville last week and host Prattville this week. Spain Park moved up to No. 6, up from No. 7, after a 42-21 win over Oak Mountain, and the Jaguars host Thompson this week.
Make-A-Wish Alabama golf tournament returns to Greystone Oct. 8
Make-A-Wish Alabama will hold its annual Putt Wishes First Golf Tournament on Thursday, Oct. 8, at Greystone Golf & Country Club's Founders Course in Hoover. Registration and other activities will begin at noon, followed by an afternoon of golf. The fundraiser also will include a silent auction. Proceeds will support Make-A-Wish Alabama's work granting wishes for children with critical illnesses. The organization said more than 210 children across Alabama are currently waiting for wishes.

Hoover High to host 6th annual homecoming parade
Hoover High School will host its 6th annual homecoming parade on Wednesday, September 9, at 6 p.m., and the community is invited to take part. This year's theme is "Miami Nights," and more than 50 groups are set to participate, including Hoover City Schools organizations, athletic teams, community-sponsored floats, youth teams and more.

More than a badge: Brock Hardy builds trust one student at a time
For many students, encounters with police officers in the school, like a visit to the principal’s office, often signaled trouble and negativity. Sgt. Brock Hardy has made it his mission to change that in Hoover City Schools. "What we don't want is the movie version where if you see us, it's not a good day," said Hardy, the newly promoted sergeant over the Hoover Police Department's school resource officer unit. "We're there every day, good or bad.
Hoover mom, business owner to compete for Mrs. America
Not only does Katie Guerin wear many hats — from mother and wife to business owner and community volunteer — but she also dons a variety of tiaras. A Hoover resident, Guerin has been competing in pageant scholarship programs across Alabama, Georgia and Florida since she was 12 years old. After aging out of teen pageants, she moved into the adult category and won titles like Ms. Alabama United States and Ms. Woman Florida United States.
A pandemic dream becomes a Hoover gathering place
Just like Norm on “Cheers,” when Hoover resident Will Mayhall enters Brock’s Gap Brewing Company, everyone inside yells, “Will!” Mayhall and his wife, Erin Shonsey, are regulars at the brewery, and the staff and other regulars know them well. They frequent the brewery with their children, ages 13 and 10. “It’s a great family place,” Shonsey said. “The staff is friendly, and the kids can play outside. There are games and fun things for them to do.
Shades Mountain Elementary nurse named Alabama School Nurse of the Year
For Elisabeth Goodman, caring for students means much more than just handing out bandages or checking temperatures. The Shades Mountain Elementary School nurse has built a reputation for promoting health and wellness throughout Hoover schools and the community, efforts that recently earned her the title of 2026 Alabama Registered School Nurse of the Year.
