By late July 2026, Nicaraguan dictator Daniel Ortega announced the abolition of elections in Nicaragua. The end-of-democracy announcement—a departure from the wafer-thin charade—has sparked concern among Nicaraguan civil-society groups in exile in the United States. On August 21 in Miami, Florida, Nicaraguan leaders called on the Donald Trump administration to take stronger action against the regime.

Read in English. Un grupo de 10 demócratas autodenominados centristas anunció en junio la iniciativa “Promesa a Estados Unidos”. Esta rechaza el socialismo en favor del capitalismo, fronteras seguras, seguridad pública, responsabilidad fiscal, libertad de expresión y patriotismo. Cualquiera que defienda estos valores debería votar por candidatos respaldados por Donald Trump.

Lea en español. The State Department’s (DOS) July 20 report “Cuba: The Capital of 21st Century Communism” (the Report) will not achieve momentum on its own. Secretary of State Marco Rubio accurately calls Cuba “an espionage superpower” with agents burrowed into “the highest levels of the US government.” However, the Report’s critics have landed serious blows to its credibility that are hampering its practical impact.

Read in English. El informe del Departamento de Estado (DOS) del 20 de julio, “Cuba: The Capital of 21st Century Communism” (el Informe), no generará impacto por sí solo. El secretario de Estado Marco Rubio acertadamente califica a Cuba como “una superpotencia del espionaje” con agentes infiltrados en “los niveles más altos del gobierno de Estados Unidos”. Sin embargo, los críticos del Informe han asestado golpes serios a su credibilidad que están obstaculizando su impacto práctico.

Nick Virzi makes a strong case for the United States as a beacon for the world in “Why Guatemala Celebrates America as True North.” This appeared in the Impunity Observer, of which I am editor at large. There is, however, a flipside to Virzi’s positive assessment. A conglomeration of groups working with Democrats have engaged in a concerted, criminal assault on US culture and institutions to transform the United States into a one-party state—AKA a dictatorship.

The Alberta independence movement has in the last year transitioned out of theory into the nitty-gritty of campaign politics. The transition to the practical, if Albertan patriots are to prevail, means facing up to difficult decisions. While I cannot address the whole array here, I will respond to a few that have percolated in my own mind. On May 25, I was privileged to raise these questions as host of The Path to Alberta Nationhood event in Calgary.

Read in English. El 27 de julio, el Directorio de la Superintendencia de Competencia (SICOM) aceptó la renuncia irrevocable del primer superintendente, Jorge Castillo. La SICOM fue creada en 2024 para contribuir a que los mercados guatemaltecos funcionen con reglas claras, menos barreras artificiales y mayor libertad de participación. La renuncia anticipada ocurrió en medio del descontento ciudadano por los elevados salarios de la SICOM.

Lea en español. On July 27, the board of directors of Guatemala’s Competition Authority (SICOM) accepted the irrevocable resignation of the first superintendent, Jorge Castillo. SICOM was created in 2024 to help the nation’s markets operate with clearer rules, fewer artificial barriers, and greater freedom of participation. The early resignation occurred amid citizen disagreement regarding SICOM’s elevated salaries.

Lea en español. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on July 16: “The Cuban regime’s sprawling intelligence and ideological network helped to build the far left in our country and our hemisphere.” Rubio must determine who within the State Department (DOS) is helping far-left Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo impede President Donald Trump’s larger agenda in this key country. DOS has portrayed Arévalo as a counterterrorism partner despite evidence that Guatemala is a narco-state.
