Throughout the American Legion softball season, I have met some incredible parents who have welcomed me as I cover their athletes and teams. I have also met some friends behind the camera along the way — people who help each other find the best angles, share advice, and make sure we all capture those moments on the softball field. On hot summer days, I have had parents offer me water while I’m walking around taking photos; those small gestures mean so much.

On July 4, 2026, the United States marked 250 years since the Declaration of Independence. There were flags, fireworks, music and speeches about national greatness. But if the anniversary becomes only a celebration, it will have been be a wasted opportunity. A republic survives not by ceremony, but by stewardship. As a Navy veteran, preservationist and former congressional candidate, I still believe in the republic because inherited things can be lost.

Dear Dave: My parents recently lost their home due to some very bad financial habits. They have always had financial problems, even though my father is smart and makes good money. They found another place to live, but since all this happened, my father has been constantly asking me for money. He asks me to come over to talk about this when my husband is at work, and my mother isn’t home. The last time, he even asked me to give him half of an inheritance I received from my grandparents.

To understand the erosion of how Americans interact these days, just look to our recent story of vaccinations. For years, parents routinely got children inoculated so they wouldn’t get dreaded diseases like crippling polio or measles or diphtheria. They understood vaccines would protect their kids and their communities. Then along came Covid-19. Some 1.2 million Americas died — but many millions more didn’t die because they got a vaccine.

For nearly four and a half years, the people of Ware Shoals have waited. They have waited for answers. They have waited for repairs. They have waited for the return of a river that has defined their community for generations. Now they are being asked to prepare for something else entirely.

I’m not exactly sure what it means, with the exception of habitat, depletion, but I have seen a plethora of wildlife in the last couple of days. Our farm hosts a flock of wild turkeys which still make me smile when I hear them ‘gobbling’ to one another in the field, although I do jump at the one female, who gets perpetually lost in the woods, and gives sharp, nasal blasts for help that sounds not unlike the horn from a 1982 Chevy Chevette.
